I think if it takes off in SA, we in for a bumpy ride because like TB, it will spread like hell amongst the poor and those with aids. Also another things to remember is that healthcare in SA is maybe better? than further north.
Imagine it spreads north of SA combo'd with poverty + aids = lots of people dead. The symptoms can be passed for cold/flu [Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue] and how worried do people get when you have those symptoms?

well without swine flu I wouldn't have my cool sig, so all's good :D

On a more serious note, just as when aids first entered the scene and everybody was convinced that it was going to be the final destruction of the human race, and well that wasn't the case, and neither will swine flu be...

http://health.howstuffworks.com/15-most-common-causes-of-death-in-the-world.htm

Something to think about is this.. Africa accounts for 90% of malaria deaths world wide. <- due to funding + poverty as other sub-tropical regions manage to contain it. Now TB is also big predominately due to combo of poverty and .. aids. You can guess what Swine Flu will do if in with normal, healthy people its spreading and causing problems.

to those lauding the flu for its great performance in population control, I got one question for you. I am gonna be blunt; if you such great fans of population control through epidemics, are you gonna volunteer yourselves and your next-of-kin for for the good of human kind??

Can I volunteer each and very member of humanity? Including myself and my entire family of course.

Human beans. The most conceited race on the face of the universe

Two people infected are infected in East London.. wow... that virus is getting around.

Remember that AIDS is hardly never put down as the cause of death so i don't believe those stats are accurate.

Millions die each year due to aids but on their death certificate it does indicate aids was the cause.

2 people wizard? Damn i would leave EL like yesterday i mean at the rate this swine flu is spreading and killing SA will be destroy in seconds :D

Not at all bwana

The reason they died was AIDS, AIDS does not kill you but they died because they had AIDS if that makes sense. If they did not have AIDS a simple flu or tb case would not have killed them.

So instead of saying Death by : AIDS
It is put down as FLU or TB or something along those lines which does not actually you give a clear indication as too how many actually die due to having the AIDS virus.

Read it again - first quote "AIDS is hardly never put down as the cause of death" - IOW it is NOT

Second quote "on their death certificate it does indicate aids was the cause." - IOW it IS.

Yea but i am not 100% certain that everyone who dies from aids gets a death certificate indicating something else, i was just pointing out that for the most part a death certificate will not indicate aids as the cause, like i said i cannot be sure that it does get put down as the cause in many cases because the stat above shows:

4. HIV/AIDS 4.9

So somewhere AIDS must be put down as the cause but that number should be far higher because people die because they have AIDS.

The reason for them AIDS part not being on the certificate in most cases is purely because of the Doctors working on the actual cause of death which is correct.

If a Person dies of Aids related complications they didn't die of AIDS but because of one or more complications. Mostly it's pneumonia. I would say 9/10 Pneumonia deaths = AIDS related. The amount of people living with AIDS is documented so we will know how many people are confirmed with being HIV/AIDS infected.

As to the amount of AIDS related deaths there is no way to show statistically how many that is. Because of the Certification at death. The part where AIDS is noted as cause of death is inaccurate.

Actually it's usually a way for governments to fudge their AIDS stats - denial rather than acknowledgement . . . nope no problem here.

I'm sure it's pretty clear what the underlying cause of death is.

I agree with you 100%

But AIDS did not kill the said person. It would have been some kind of infection his body couldn't fight off because of AIDS. Unless they (Government) make it law to note if a patient had HIV/AIDS by time of death, the true stats will never be known.

I suggest they add a section to the Death certificate:

Chronic illness/disease:

Cause of Death:

That should solve this little problem with the AIDS death stats.

Pitbull the simple fact of the matter is that AIDS is main reason they died, had they not had the virus they would have survived, so they died because of AIDS. It is a strange topic but i agree with bwana because it's far better to say pneumonia killed them as opposed to AIDS. They actually died because their body could not stop an attack so for me AIDS killed them.

You also say:

The amount of people living with AIDS is documented so we will know how many people are confirmed with being HIV/AIDS infected.

That is absolute rubbish, we do not have a clue how many people actually have aids. for all we know 70% of our population may have AIDS. The biggest problem with AIDS is nobody cares, We have no idea how many people have aids nor do we care to know.

As far as i am concerned Every single person in this country should be tested and get some sort of branding indicting they have aids. As much as this may seen harsh so is sleeping around not knowing you have aids. Aids will wipe out Africa and nobody is doing anything to stem the flow, aids is also a growing problem in many continents but again because it is not an air - borne disease so nobody cares.

If i had aids i could go all over the world and sleep with as many people as i like and if i infect them nobody cares.

You can not die from the AIDS virus. AIDS doesn't kill you the attacks on your body by infections can't be stopped because of the AIDS infection. But you don't die because of AIDS, it is however a factor that contributed to your death..

I think the Bold part you missed :o

I agree 100%

Again I agree 100%. I have mentioned this before on previous AIDS/HIV threads. For all I care they should all be burned at the steak or be marked in some way or another to prevent innocent people from getting infected.

And no I'm not a sadistic bastard I have been affected personally by the HIV virus ;) Which could have been prevented if all of this was taken more seriously 20 years ago and it was halted in it's tracks.

Well not burnt at the stake but just something to stop the silent killer.

While i agree AIDS does not kill it is the main factor in the death and it is 90% too blame for the person dying. You also die because you had AIDS, if you did not have aids you would have lived so i think you die from AIDS and the death certificate should indicate you died from AIDS as we would have far better statistics as too how bad the virus actually is.

I heard (from some random person in the office) that a player in a recent varsity squash tournament managed to infect every other player to the extent that the varsity is not reopening until there are no new infections reported amongst its faculty and student body. I believe that this was in PE. Furthermore, a UJ player managed to bring the illness back with him.

Not scaremongering but it is suddenly a lot more than 30 infections.

So no news report?

Could it have been just a normal flu virus and they think it's swine flu? Was it confirmed as swine flu?

As far as i know it's the squash team that caused the reported cases to rise to 30. Until people start dying, i'm not going to panic.

Here is the thing. The virus mutates and when it becomes a killer you have a serious problem. It is just so much better to kill it off before it kills you. Wait and see isn't really an option because it'll be too late.

It may seem mild now, and it may be that way for the rest of the season. But this isn't a case of 'if', it is a case of 'when'.

No Reptilian. Like I said. Your immune system can fight off the common flu, but not swine flu. You need medication to be cured.
