We looking to upgrade our TV to an LCD and looking at getting a 32" and preferably 720p - do you get 1080p on 32" monitors?

I don't want to pay too much but I want something from a reliable brand.

I'd like HDMI input, along with some RCA, S-video, and hopefully either VGA or DVI.

Any good experiences you've had?

will there be a visible (naked eye) difference between 720p and 1080p on a 32"?

sorry, not being helpful, but also interested :)

We have sony bravia's throughout the house ... got to love those esp with teh same remote control.

I like Sony products. The Samsung ones are nice but they look a bit cheapish (plasticky).

Go to Makro Silverlakes - last time I was there they could offer me them cheap.

Regards
sdd

edit: I see the you are in the cape - so strike the silverlakes option. go to nashuaelectronics.com - they deliver free of charge and specials are good sometimes. bought a 26" Sony LCD for the spare room for R3500.

There is some nice specials ons 80cm LCD TV now, specialy samsungs. Seen some going for 7k

i also have the sony bravias, and they are great!! i say go with that!

I'd like HDMI input, along with some RCA, S-video, and hopefully either VGA or DVI.

Most of good brands will have 2 x HDMI, Component, Composite, and sometimes VGA. (The BRAVIA above does) . You can always get a DVI-HDMI cable if your gfx card doesn't support analogue VGA.

sdd: how many bravias do you HAVE?? *jealous*
In response to the thread's question, the Sony Bravia range is really second to none. The Samsung LCDs are great. I think they LOOK great too, but that's really just subjective. The build-quality on both brands are top-notch too. The price of the Samsungs, though, is just excellent :)

Yes, the Bravia mentioned above is a bit more than than I was looking to spend. 5k to 6k would be better. Would the Samsungs be in that price range?

Samsungs are more like 7000. Which isn't too bad. Otherwise, consider the lesser known brands. Sinotecs, etc. Don't know much bout them except that they're extremely cheap. You DO get a great warranty from Sinotec though :p

By the way, end of last year, Makro had a special selling 32" Bravias for 6000. Not sure which model though... Maybe S-Series? Does anyone else know?

if you not gonna buy a sony then buy a samsung!! because the other tvs have crap picture quality compared to sony and samsung

And any particular Samsung model? Or are they pretty much the same thing?

also just intrested

Hey this isn't going to be helpfull but don't want to start a new thread seeing that I want to discuss the same thing. Will you see and experience a big difference between a progressive(780p / 1080p) and a non-progressive(780i / 1080i) HD TV.

I try to stick to one brand if possible....

I have a lot of Sony equipment and on their website I often get extended warrantees on them ... for one unit they gave me a pickup at home 5 year **exchange** guarantee.

I have bought so many Sony stuff that everytime I register them I get additional warrantee and sh!!t loads of freebies.

So IMHO go for the Sony. Well built compared to the Samsung. The only thing I like about the Samsung is the swivel function.

I have learnt over the years that for some things (not everything) it is good to be brand loyal.

On a side note about brand loyalty:
I have driven BMW's all my life and despite their perceived poor resale - I have always had joy with them (during trade-ins, services, etc.) Once they even 'loaned' me a 750i for a few months whilst I waited for mine.
A colleague/firend had his 330id 'cloned' after 8months of driving when his EMU failed twice. He received a 550i to drive around from day one for two months. Thats service for you!!
