So when, if ever, is Telkom gonna bump all 384k connections to any higher speed??? This "broadband" connection is frustrating to the max... :mad:

Is it wishful thinking or is there actually a chance that they will do it?

not even all the 4mb users where upgraded, so what makes u think that they'll upgrade all the 384kb users?

That is because of the new technology that is still being rolled out. You cannot tell me that 384k clients are limited because the exchanges have max 384 capability.

All the 1meg users were upgraded (with a tiny number of exceptions) a while back, while we plebs got nothing. How do their new speeds compare to the old 1meg, you ask. Maybe it's 150% of the original? Maybe even 200%. No dude, it's now at 4meg about 400% of the original speed! Guess what else??? Many of these 1meg users are now on 10meg: 1000% of the original!!

Ok let's see what happened to the slowest "broadband" connections. Are these also 10 times faster? Maybe just 5 times faster? Or maybe just double??? Nope. Nothing. Not even 50% faster. Rather, these connections are 0% faster.

Gotta love the parity...

I wouldn't mind paying more... but I am not prepared to pay what they want for 512.
If Telkom introduced a 1Mbit or 2Mbit for somewhere between 384 and 4/10Mbit, then I would go for it.
For some reason, the pricing for 512 is completely out-of-whack :(

umm for 4/10 mbit you actually paying for 1 mbit line, but i agree with the price of 512 line its too much compared to 384k

goes like

384k = R152
512k = R326
1024k = R413

so 512 by rights should be half of 1024k line price even 384k price is bit too much compared to 1 meg speed+ line. Hope they drop the 384k price to R100 and make 512k R150 and 1024k+ to R300

But with telkom it will never happen anyway

I'm on a 4Mbps line because the 512K line makes no sense cost-wise as a user (no matter how much Telkom wants to justify it). However, given the current 'IP transit war' (MWeb vs SAIX) its hardly worth having a high speed line at the moment, since everything feels so slow anyway...

what did the lucky 4mb users pay to get bumped upto 10mb?

We pay the premium price of R413... We are the people who Telkom would like to keep... The "high rollers". Keep us happy and we shall continue using the service, Telkom are making more money out of us than the 384K users. Chances are we use more bandwidth as well.

If someone were to have a Nokia 3310 which needed repairs or a Nokia N8 which needed repairs...
Chances are the N8's repairs will cost more and the person doing the repairs would make more money out of repairing the N8 than the 3310 and the N8 would take preference.
Same applies here.

Telkom are still the only providers for ADSL in South Africa, they still hold the monopoly in that respect. If you are annoyed at the 384K line speeds you will either continue using the service, being angry. Pay the premium for the 4Mbit service or possibly move to wireless internet and depending on what you use your internet for ... ADSL may be the only option worth while for you - if you need low pings, cheap bandwidth, stable connection etc.

I'm sure Telkom appreciate your loyalty, but it is little comfort to the OP, myself, and the rest of the majority of ADSL users forced to remain on 384. The point here really is this: 384 should not exist. It should be 1024 minimum, and I don't believe anyone would call that fanciful even at the current R152 per month rental. So a little less of the high-brow arrogance please - it rankles.

Actually the slowest was 192k. And you guys got upgraded for free to 384k.
