3G Blues Again.

Got to love honest people :)

I pm'ed you with my number, did everything check out as being correctly activated or should i start worrying about impossible signal reception? :(

Patience, young man....:)

I've asked the guys to check your profile.

Have you been able to test your SIM in a data card? Will be the best and quickest next step.

I'll try to see if i can find a data card to borrow for the moment, just have to make a few calls.

Download Speed: 327 kbps (40.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 35 kbps (4.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Looks like I'll have to start to make use of the post office in order to post data packets where they need to go, It might just be faster :P

Hang on with the data card, think I found your problem.

As I suspected you're on the old 3G-profile which limits you to 384/64. Not sure why you were not upgraded automatically. I've asked for your profile to be changed. Might take a few hours. We're checking if anyone else is in this situation. We'll probably run a bulk-update if so.

I'm telling you if superman dies, you are my new hero :)

Not automatically upgraded? I thought as much, these days one has to ask in order for something to go one's way. So it seems as Ill be waiting for the possible profile switch, seriously hope it works.

Will I be able to see a noticeable improvement in order to check if the upgrade went through?

I greatly appreciate your effort, thanks again.

You should, especially in the uplink as the network is much less congested in that direction. The moment you see anything higher than 64K in the upload test you know you're on HSDPA. Post the results as soon as you see this jump.

There were very few users on the 3G profiles, but they were supposed to have been migrated. With millions of profiles you sometimes get a few that slip through. I suspect the guys will do a bulk run to look for more. But as with anything to do with a 20M+ subscriber base; it's not a trivial task. Can run for a few days!

Is there anyway I can check myself wot my profile am? I see a solid blue light on my red sticking out thing and the web is very slow tonight

Well I have a slight problem now, it might be a good thing or not. I can't connect to 3G at all anymore, i get an excelent signal, but my phone tells me that "the other party has ended the connection". So either I can't connect because they are busy upgrading the profile, which shouldnt have taken long, because I couldnt connect from around 5:40pm I think, and it's still offline, OR they seriously fffff screwed something up.

And yes, I'm sitting at internet cafe at the moment, something I didn't want to do.

vodacom3g do you have any idees what could be happening?

Ok, V3G not online again, so I guess ill need to phone 155 again, and see whats up there.

As far as I know they are disconnecting the data connection from their side, as I am getting a clear signal. And I dont hope that the "upgrade" to a HSDPA profile has caused my GPRS an 3G to become useless because of the lack of connectivity I'm experiencing.

You'll hear from me if i could sort out the problem, otherwise I'm without internet...........damn......thats a horrifying thought.

I got my connection to connect again, and tested it.... not going to say the scores its..........it makes EDGE look like a speed demon. So I phoned 155 and asked if they knew on what data profile I was, 3G or HSDPA, but they didn't know what I was talking about, so I gave up explaining. They told me that you were probably misinformed, which i highly doubt :) . So now I don't know what else to do.

You seemed as if you knew what could be the problem, I'm counting on you to inform those about the "profiles" etc, so SOMEONE can be informed in order to rectify this issue / unnecessary irritation.

Hope this matter is resolved somehow, thx again v3g :(

Tested it again

Download Speed: 145 kbps (18.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 255 kbps (31.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Don't know wtf happened there upload higher than download?!? Test ran 10:02pm

Something i noticed while doing the speed test is that i used 8Megs of Data. Is this correct? Or was i imagining things??
It is great fun to play with these speed test specially the Vodacom one. When it gets to HSDPA the scale is red. As one guy said "ek druk hom in die rooi in","ja swaer jou bank rekening ook". Be very carefull how often you run these speed test's they can chew up your data bundle chop chop. . Then poor v3g has to please explain why why why.

As v3g said the up is above 64Kbps (255kbps). Down eish I dont know maybe only half the profile has been fixed.?
:p

Yeah, sorry. Popped out for while. Cara and rpm are in town and we had a few Frangelico's!

With that kind of upload you're definitely on HSDPA. But you're facing the wrong way. Take you system and turn it through 180 degrees. This way the upload will now become the download and you will get the correct speed in the correct direction.

Before csnoopy think I'm serious, something is very wrong here, your download sucks. PM me all your contact details, area, etc. and I'll pass it along for investigation.

Episode 12

Oh Lord it's hard to be............on 3G! Anyway Ill pm you details, it spikes now and then, but im not moving modem anywhere, it stays put. got a 1400kbps during test for 3 sec then poof gone, so somewhere there is a signal flying around. I'm scared to keep on testing cause its KILLING my bundle.

Ill buy myself a usb extension cable so i can hang my phone in the tree, then it will cancel the -6db loss, and get me bluetooth headset for incoming calls, sounds like an idea ;)

Thx for your effort v3g, someone is doing the community a favour!

Now we only need someone to care about global warming and we're set :D

PS: Is there a way you can pm me the closest tower near me, or would it be difficult?

Got your PM tx. No name? Boy, must have been tough at school!

Going to log this call with regional support; "Got this subscriber who has a problem with 3G. Please go out to his house, don't have a name, but he answers to 'Psycho'.....PS. Don't go near his shower...."

Now, how many support people do you think will show up? :)

Whoa whoa wait wait... are you using a modem... your phone... or your phone as your modem???

I'm currently using my i600 as a modem as it has hsdpa capability, when connecting to the internet i get a full HSDPA signal, which can be verified by the "H" icon on the screen of the device. It usually constantly switches between 3G and H because of the profile issue that i had. Now it stays on HSDPA, so i guess my profile is upgraded, but still the downlink fluctuates, although i still have "full bar" reception as they say.

PS: I've heard of people talking about software for one's cellphone that make it almost like a signal tester? 2 applications were mentioned, CellTrack and IP Dashboard Net Monitor. I'm looking for the same type of software but for my windows mobile 5 device, as Celltrack is Symbian and Net Monitor didnt work on my phone :(

Has the thought ever crossed your mind that something might be wrong with your phone? Or maybe its a hardware limitation. yes, its a phone with HSDPA Support. But its no E220 modem?

And dont you have like a friend with an i600 also? Then you can borrow his and test it your area

The thought hasn't even occurred to me that my phone might be faulty, because its about 3 weeks old, so I highly doubt something being flaky.

I understand its not a modem, but being able to receive the 2000Mhz signal means it can USE the signal, and by far i haven't read a report or review from any online hardware expert that the HSDPA support is anything less than adequate. :)
