3G/HSPA/LTE Modems

Hi,is it possible to flash the E220 to allow 900mhz umts? Sum1 told me if u flashed with the ZTE firmware it could. I don't believe it but thought i'd ask.I cannot pickup cell c at all on my E220,even if i use edge profile.

No, "Sum1" is talking rubbish.

Why are cell c simcards working in a huwei modems? Mtn works and vodacom but cell c it shows searching for network.
Which model of Huawei modem? Have you checked on the lists whether it supports UMTS900?

Good Day Spooony

like ginggs said it has to be UMT 900 supported.
Most older modems are 2100.
what modem do you have can check for you.

Have you managed to try the Sierra Aircard 307 ?

It wasn't for me, it was for a friend. He hasn't made up his mind yet whether to go with a 3G solution or use a local WISP. If you have more questions on the modem post them here and pm 1geoff99 to respond.

Hmmm, I just did a comparison test between a Huawei E1820 and a Huawei E583c (a mifi router with a proper antenna connection) with a general 9dB magnetic antenna - the E583c completely outperforms the E1820, which supports the contention that the E1820 antenna connection is useless.

The problem is that I already have a pile of 3G routers and modems, and don't really want to buy more stuff - but it looks as if I may not have a choice !

The E1820's external antenna works. It just requires that there is a little bit of signal on the internal antenna. But because the E1820 does not report the external antenna connection's RSSI, pointing external antenna correctly is a bit more schleppy. I suggest cable-tieing the modem to the external antenna on the roof, plugging into a laptop direclty, run MDMA and do the rotate-10-degrees-wait-one-minute-check-signal exercise.

It should work, but better option is to use inductive coupler for the positioning. It gives a real signal indication.

ajax: For signal strenght 105dBm it is worth to find unused satelite dish an use it as a reflector. Here problem arise with USB cable. So maybe you should find a cheap 2nd hand modem like Vodafone K3565 with proper antenna connector, you can't get whooosh anyway and K3565 performs well with weak signal.

i have the same issue. On Cell C site it list the modem as supported on the network. The modem cant do 4G and to my knowledge cell c still supports hspa which is the maximum the modem supports and its on 2100.

Best Generic 3G usb modem

Hi,
I wonder if you can tell me according to your experience which Generic 3G usb modem is best - software and hardware wise.
I notice that modems that support WCDMA are inclined to go into WCDMA mode when idle and when data flows, it goes back into HSPA mode, but not immediately. There is always that frustrating pause between switching between WCDMA and HSPA, unless one can manually force HSPA mode only?
Speed and price is also an important factor to consider.
Modems that I know of so far are:-
1. Mecer WM726 21.6/5.76 Mbps Do not support UMTS 900 R515
2. Aircard 307 21.6/5.76 Mbps Does support UMTS 900 R800
3. VKom 303 21.6/5.76 Mbps Does or does not support UMTS 900? R720
4. Other?
Thanks
Johan
UMTS 900 not compulsory but welcome.

HSPA(+), HS?PA variants all are based on WCDMA, AFAIK.
It is properly shown in MDMA: 3G (initial WCDMA) when idle, then switching to the higher standard when data is requested. It takes a moment, this pause is reduced in newer standards (beyond 21Mbps).

Re: modems:
- if UMTS900MHz is not important I would vote E272
- if speed not important - E160X or Vodafone K3565. Reason is that very few people enjoy top speed and this one has external antenna connector.

The E272, E160X and K3565 are not generic.
Speed is important and future proof.
So! My question has not been answered yet. :(

Re. Generic 3G usb modems

Own K4505-z, K3565-z and Aircard 307. Can confirm that all support CellC 900MHz. Unlike many others on this forum, I've not had any major problems with the K4505-z :)
Of the three, I would definitely vote for the Aircard 307 - best software & firmware support from Sierra site. Has been very reliable and as reported in other posts on MyBB it also properly supports the use of an external antennae . The latest "Aircard Watcher" also provides a neat, useful and unobtrusive interface.

I have six assorted modems and really do not want to buy another.

I have a fast E1820 which does not properly support an external antenna, and an E272 which does, but which does not support 900 UMTS.

So it seems that I need an Aircard 307- where is the cheapest place to get one?

Or is there a more futureproof alternative available (eg LTE support) ?

Check Gumtree for places to buy Aircard 307 - got mine brand new for R500 :)
For futureproofing need to find out what modem MTN are using for their LTE trial.
Perhaps some forumites here are lucky enough to be on the trial?
