yeah, will do. I just saw it as compatible on the CellC website and believed them, won't do that again.

Ginggs sent Cell_C a mail querying the E220 support. They in turn contacted Huawei who supplied them with the information. Huawei said that early E220's did not support it, but that there are model's that do, but could give no clear way of identifying these other than checking the packaging in which the E220 shipped. So the decision was made to list it as unsupported again.

very strange... so there was actually a difference in hardware within the same model number. Cell C guy who phoned me told me the same and I just told him i tried all the firmwares up to the latest so it must be wrong. In fairness to them, if this information is correct, my E220 is over 2 years old.

I'm still not entirely sure that's what they meant, the English is a bit ambiguous.

Dell Wireless 5540 HSPA Mini-Card Modem and Cell C?

I have a Dell XPS 1640 laptop and it has a built in 3G modem, as mentioned in the title of this post.

Has anyone managed to use a Cell C sim with this modem and how do you go about getting it to work? I have a Vodacom prepaid sim in here and of course it's as easy as putting the sim in and clicking on connect because the Dell Mobile Broadband software knows Vodacom and it's settings.

If anyone's used Cell C with Dell's Mobile Broadband Manager even better..

Cell C use 900Mhz for their 3G/HSDPA service so you will need to find out if the card supports it or not. The previous generation card was a rebranded Novatel card, maybe check their specs.

Could anyone confirm whether the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3Gs can actually connect via 3G on Cell C's new data network at 3G speed? Based on the specs it seems that they cannnot, but I'm curious, maybe it can?

Again based on specs, it would seem the iPhone4 should be able to connect with 3G?

Anyone know whether older PCMCIA datacards -- specifically the Novatel Merlin U740 -- will support Cell C's network? I still use it as my main modem because unlike the USB sticks, it will take a direct plugin of the Poynting data antenna I need in my rather dodgy area.

Nope - iPhone 3G and 3GS only supports 900Mhz on EDGE so your browsing will crawl though it will work. iPhone 4 will work just fine at the higher speeds.

For anyone else using this card, which was widely distributed by Vodacom, I can now confirm from testing with a Cell C data-enabled simcard that although it will (sporadically) work at GPRS/EDGE speed, it definitely cannot handle the higher speeds. However even at GPRS speed it's not really happy and has trouble connecting, where other modems (e.g. my Huawei E-180) connect instantly. Bottom line: the U740 is not really viable with the Cell C service.

Sierra AirCard 307

Anyone had any experience with the Sierra AirCard 307 USB on the Cell C 3g network?

Yes, I did it with my Vodacom SIM (there are lots of hits, on You Tube alone, on how to do it).

If your SIM is very old, (mine was +5 years ancient) it might be worth paying for a SIM swap. New ones are bigger - not sure if that makes them better though! :)

EDIT: When I say bigger, of course I meant in capacity!

OK, I'll answer my own question. I managed to obtain one of these and so far it works like a dream. Software installed in 2 minutes and worked straight away, except for a small issue concerning network device priority, but quickly solved via Sierra KB. Also, it wasn't initially clear how to send USSD commands, but again was quickly resolved.

Default connection profile is NDIS, but you can also use DUN. I don't know which is preferable.

I also have an Huawei E1820, but in some ways I prefer the Sierra for the following reasons. Generic software and firmware updates are readily available from the Sierra website where comprehensive help can also be found. Also, the antenna connector is conventional compared to the quirky E1820. I haven't noticed any speed differences between the E1820 and the Sierra.
