MTN 3G has been available in Underberg for the last 3 months(give or take). On my cellphone I get 3.5G with 5 bar reception. So I bought a 3G dongle and only get 2G when connected to laptop. Can not get better than Edge connection. When using cellphone as a modem connected to my laptop I did a speed test with an international server and got above 850KB/sec.I bought another dongle, thinking the previous one was suspect but the same result. There is no way of forcing 3G on either of the dashboards.
Why the difference between the cell phone 3G and dongle 2G/3G. Any idea guys.

You might get more help if specifying model numbers, so you could find better dashboards for your modems. Did you try to use MDMA?

The 1st modem was the E220 which is now bricked because of all the updates I put on it and the 2nd modem was just HSDPA/3G modem I got off Bid or Buy,no model number.I took modem to below the Vodacom tower and it showed up as 3G, but not at home. The only choice of network setup is WCDMA or GSM.I've tried both.

These are right options. WCDMA=3G, GSM=2G. Does it register to the network when selecting WCDMA-only?

Yes it does.It gives MTN as current and Vodacom as forbidden, obviously no VC sim in.
Edit: Just noticed it defaults to WCDMA preferred even setting at WCDMA only.Maybe signal not strong enough for modem but good for cellphone??

Then you have 3G connection with MTN. Does it connect?
Your modem should detect all available networks maybe except Cell C. It depends if modem supports WCDMA 900MHz. Once again, download MDMA, you can query more information about modem capabilities and network.

Re: E220. Search this forum (posting from ginggs) about recomended firmware for this modem.

I don't know anything about your modem. For Huawei and ZTE modems (and any other I saw) this settings is stored and remembered in the modem (forever). If you select WCDMA-only and network is not found, it will not switch over to GSM.
