In a hard-hitting investigation, 3rd Degree reveals that at certain state hospitals, HIV-positive women are forcibly sterilised. It’s a misguided but cruel attempt by health workers to stop the spread of the virus, intended to punish “wayward” women for getting infected.

3rd Degree looks at the lives of several women here and in neighbouring Namibia who are struggling to come to terms with the fact that they can’t conceive. For them, the pain – and emptiness - of never being able to bear children again, just doesn’t go way.

This unspoken, ignored practice adds up to medicalised violence against women with HIV. It’s nothing less than a cruel and cynical violation of their human rights.

Its very controversial is it not?
Is it right or wrong in your eyes?

Its not wrong.... its not politically correct but its not wrong at all.

I rate it should be done more often, you get people with like 6 kids and no job WTF.

Its not a right bring an HIV+ kid in to this world.

I still think HIV infected people should be branded as such and every single person should be tested for AIDS and marked if they are positive.

People treat aids like it is no big deal while it explodes, yet let some flu virus comes around and the whole world is in fear while the silent killer goes about it's business and nobody cares that the infection rate is sky rocketing.

Na that is a bit hectic but I also think that the test should be compulsory, then if you have unprotected sex you go to jail/ get sterilized

It irresponsible to conceive knowing you're going to suffer from aids and die, the kids will have to take care of you, assuming you live long enough, ultimately they will be left without a parent.

Also what about the father? He'd be exposed to the virus or if he's also infected he too and will need to be taken care and ultimately die leaving the kids with no parents/breadwinners.

Now add poverty to the mix and it's had not to consider sterilization.

People need licenses for animals and cars and bicycles. Not for having children. Regulate having children. Harshly. The Chinese introduced a "one child" policy. Not for nothing.

Years back, my gf told me that the women working for her in landscaping, in the Transkei, were being sterilised. They told her that the government pushes them into it as soon as they have too many children. The team leader named her last child, Nolast.

Sterilisation cause of HIV is wrong. As I understand it , we have retrovirals that stop the passage from mother to child.

Sterilisation because your too foolish to use contraceptives and can't support additional children, yes.

Mandatory HIV tests every year/2 years, with disclosure of the results will deter people from bonking around like animals, and breeding in a similar way.

What about those that get it by other means. They'll have to live with the stigma.

Sterilization does not have any effect on diseases or virus as Fudzy said, it only prevents fertilization, it will not prevent a female from having sex or spreading HIV or other STD's.
I don't agree that females should be sterilized without their knowing, it is unethical.

The issue of population control is a different issue and unrelated to HIV.
Eventually the serious issue of population control will have to be addressed, but that time has not yet arrived, but will within 30 decades.

Right now, education is the solution to disease control, unwanted pregnancy and the economic impact of having large families.

Teaching teen females and males the financial implications of having children should be the priority regarding population control at this time.

All that I agree with but it will help with Aids orphans.

Sterilization should be mandatory for all parents after the second child.

This practice is awfully one-sided against women. Why should they be punished when the dude who infected her goes on spreading the disease?

/feminist

I think its a good idea to sterilize them, they should have started this a long time ago, sterilize them, beggars, and prisoners, if they cant prove that they can safely support more than two kids, then they should be sterilized after kid no2... It is a sickening site to see so many children standing on the side of the road begging, besides weeks back they were renting babies out... WTF.

If the SPCA sterilizes all dogs they treat for free/donation based, then i dont see why hey dont adopt the same principle for them... Way to go state hospitals at least you guys are doing something right :)

It's because human beings aren't dogs, son.

It is still unfair that innocent dogs can get put down, and sterilized for not doing anything wrong, but Humans that rape, murder, knowingly spread HIV, are normally given a free pass to do as they like?

IMO if you look at it logically dogs are more superior than humans, they show more love and compassion than most humans. Ask yourself the question what is humanity, and what does it really mean, then have a look at how animals are treated.

A wise man once said that you should always judge a country by the way they treat their animals

This is the type of thing which occurs because of poor staff training, morale and numbers. Why does it happen? Because the govt feels it can underspend in health and instead host extravaganza world cups. It's pretty disgusting to try to pretend we are USA or Japan (we can host a WC too) but have this type of BS going on in state institutions. People who support the money wasted on the WC should reconcile themselves that this type of management leads to diversion of funds from essential projects to vanity ones.
