4 Mbps ADSL bundled pricing comparison

The more I look at these comparisons, the more the same pattern seems to emerge - Telkom is still the best option for a base package. For the life of me I couldn't see why anybody would want to take a bundled option.

Telkom DoBroadband 3 (4MB line + 5GB data) = R554
Afrihost 5GB at R29/GB = R145
Total for 10GB (excl line rental) = R699

That is right up there with the Sainet price - plus you get 30GB local data included. And with Afrihost's regular specials you're bound to get more bang for your buck from time to time.

Also, you're not tied into any bundled line crap, so you're free to jump ISPs should somebody else have a better deal.

If you are on Telkom's Closer Calling Plan 5, you effectively pay R351.00 for your 4Mbps line, then you can buy your bandwidth from Afrihost - 10GB for R290.00 which would give you a total of R641.00 per month ! Off course you must first have a need for this telephone package. I think this offers the best value at the moment.

But it is not realistic as you will in fact pay R413 for your line rental (The R351 figure is purely theoretical)...

Not correct...My line was with WA, so after a few days i decided to phone telkom directly. sorted in a heartbeat...

Nothing beats having Telkom DoBroadband 3 with Afrihost top ups at the moment. I will stick with Telkom if we get shifted up to 8mb with 10 Gb cap. Any uncapped offering is just going to be too expensive and have too many issues at the moment.

The biggest drawing card for most with Do Broadband is the included 30gig local data. I wish the article included this as it is the only reason I haven't moved yet from telkom internet. I was hoping WA, being an innovative Tier-1 ISP now, would've bolted-on that 200gig local trial account they had with their complete offerings. I would've jumped ship in a heart beat, but alas...

'Why would anyone pay for a 4MB line and only use 3-5GB of data?'

Seems very strage to me based on the extortionate price of the line... even 10GB is questionable.
What is there to download that requires an immediately large bandwidth but is very small in size? - Why not just wait a bit longer for the 20 YouTube videos you can download per month...

Less flaming and more helpful feedback please. I'm not used to such low caps and so it's a very serious question.

Only comment with this article is that it doesn't necessarily compare apples with apples. Some of these packages include routers and some of them have unshaped data vs shaped data.

Cheers - in my experience it was always in the 5-10+GB region, esp. with updates (I know that there are some local free sites though) but it does make more sense now.

Some time ago we posted a link about a PE ISP that seriously still beats everyones prices. www.ISAT.co.za

384K = R139p/m
512k = R297 p/m
4096k = R371 p/m

they are helpful, will transfer your line from telkom account, they can recreate ports, etc etc. had no hassels with them ever and have been happy customer for over year and a half.

of course you need a telkom line as always so R131 p/m must still be added. this is pure line rental. no router, no cap. but with afrihost you can!
