4 Meg ADSL - General Max Speed?

495 normally, I'll double check again, I one peaked at 1024kb's for a few seconds though
The only thing my 4meg line is good for is downloading off news servers. I get 425 KB/s. Anything else is useless, web is slow, everything is slow, seems to run at around 17 KB/s a second. I feel like the internet was faster on my 384 line 
. Its prob coz 17 out of about 40 KB/s (on a 384 line) does not sound as bad as 17 out of 425 (not that i can expect 425 for normal browsing but it should still be better than it is).
It does get a bit better after hours though

512KB/s is the theoretical max off a 4mb line but that's excluding any overheads at all. As far as I can tell 420-455 would be a more realistic ballpark.
I usually get around ±420 off international servers via SAIX - far far less via IS recently. The key would seem to be multi-threaded downloads so I push as much as possible through one download manager or another depending in the OS I'm using.

On my IS account I am still not getting over 55k/sec down.

Well yes. I have had good speeds up till about a few days ago. Now I can't get more than 55k down...
I will test it on SAIX quick...

our current bandwidth reading is:
432.20kbps
which means you can download at 54.02 KB/sec. from our servers.
Getting this from on SAIX account, but still 40k upload speeds....

Are bits also based on a base of 2? ie a kilo is 1024 as opposed to 1000?

hang on a second here!
using the IS news servers I cant seem to get more than say 10k. Getting the files of newshost.za.net....
What am i doing wrong? using Grabit to download....this is depressing. It peaked last like to like 200k, but nothing higher - ever!

Have you checked what speed your router is synched at? You may not be synching at 4meg.

Erm, where would I find this out? In the setup page of the router itself?

Both....cached stuff is erratic....fast one minute back to 7k the next.
Uncached stuff is constant 7K
This is without packet overhead... your kbps divided by 8.8 - you will notice all (most) bandwidth calculators use the 8.8 figure.

Well when I asked for 4MB I was stuck on 512K for 5 days BUT the upload was at 4MB speeds (384K) but download was at 512K. Found out it was a damaged cable at the exchange. Now I am running at full speed. Any chance of this actually happening to you. My router was syncing at 4096/384 before it was sorted out.

I see. That sucks.
I have been going at full 4Mb speeds for months now, which has been cool.
Now I am getting a solid 40k down and 40k up...
Somthing must be wrong.

so then give them a call, ask about the speeds. They would need to send a techie out to the exchange to verify the issue on the line. The guys I spoke to (0800375375) troubleshooted with me several times. Then they just sent a oke out to see the problem and sure as hell there was a damaged cable.
TIPS: keep that ref number from 0800 375 375. get a techician out to the exchange if possible. Call at like 6am so you don't wait to get help. Gives them the whole day to get cracking on the problem.
