4 Meg ADSL - General Max Speed?

so then give them a call, ask about the speeds. They would need to send a techie out to the exchange to verify the issue on the line. The guys I spoke to (0800375375) troubleshooted with me several times. Then they just sent a oke out to see the problem and sure as hell there was a damaged cable.

TIPS: keep that ref number from 0800 375 375. get a techician out to the exchange if possible. Call at like 6am so you don't wait to get help. Gives them the whole day to get cracking on the problem.

Cool beans. I shall harass them early in the morn and see what they have to say. Last time I had a problem they dealt with it reasonably well. Sent out a techie twice no less...

Just seeing that number again made me shudder.

well you know what, that number doesn't seem to be as busy as it used to. that could be coincidence but hey. maybe it's getting better these days. also I gave them a call whenever I could and there was always something else added (provided you didn't call 5 mins apart) to the report so I could get an update. when it's a private number calling, you know its them with an update or question.

hj2k_x, so what's the update? someone steel the cable to your house and replace it with some bubblegum?

I'm getting about 1.4-1.5Mbps at varsity now and **** websites load like in an instant, I can't imagine what it's like for you buggers using 4Mbps...

Hehe, I did not get round to calling Telkom today. Busy day I have had. I might call in a minute or get up early and try then.

40-50k up and down is not bad for torrents where u have to maintain a ratio. For the newsservers though, it is no good :(

512KB/s is the theoretical max off a 4mb line but that's excluding any overheads at all. As far as I can tell 420-455 would be a more realistic ballpark.

I usually get around ±420 off international servers via SAIX - far far less via IS recently. The key would seem to be multi-threaded downloads so I push as much as possible through one download manager or another depending in the OS I'm using.

That would just be faulty reporting - sorry :o

k its around 420-460 and it spikes a bit higher only for a few seconds, I only get max speed on the is news server or if I'm downloading using a download manager

Fault logged 10 15AM.

Got through straight away!! The guy that i spoke to said he could not see anything on his side that would explain my slow speeds.

I have already swopped out one broken SMC router. I hope it is not that.

Techie just called. They have found a fault on the voice side of the line(???) and they will send a guy out to fix it asap.

Good feedback so far...

Nice. well at least they are consistent. the oke I spoke to on 3757375 didn't see anything. Once a techie is at site they see a problem immediately. Cool so now just a little prestick here, some bubblegum there and the duck tape under here and your line will be sorted. :)

I am telling you telkom came through for me, and they are actually sorting themselves out. I have had DSL for over 2 years, they are MUCH sharper now but you need to stick to your guns and have some patience.

Well the techie came on Friday unannounced( as ever) so I rushed home to deal with him. He was a really nice guy. Was kinda stumped by my problem as well.

Using my modem/router we only got speed test results of 50-55k down, and when plugged into his USB modem on his laptop, the one time we got the same kind of thing, and then we managed 300k on the Telkom line speed test.

I have an SMC router which I have already swapped out in Jan for a new one, so I really hope it is not that again. He is coming back tomorrow, the guy, with another 'expert' on DSL who will be able to hook me up apparently...

I just don't get why I would be getting consistent speeds of +-450k and then a sudden drop to not more than 50k, but with the upload speeds remaining the same...

:(

Problem fixed :)

The techies were here as promised at 9AM on the dot this morning. They tested my line and concluded it was a DSLAM fault at the exchange, which they then went away to sort out. By the end of the working day my line was back up to 4Mb speeds again- yay :)
