4MB ADSL - Here I come!

I'm also upgrading from a 512 to a 4meg and apparently my line is now synced on the 4 meg profile according to Telkom but my router shows 512. I'm pretty sure this is just because of the package i'm on with Nashua though. If i want to run to separate accounts on one Router eg One Telkom Do3 and one Afrihost account. how do i switch between the two? I know its a noob question, sorry

ADSL Settings -> username and password.

Change between the two as you wish OR setup your router in Bridge mode (modem only)
Then create PPPoE connections in windows and log in there.

Damn, upgraded my ADSL today - they say it will take between 3 and 5 days. I keep on resetting the router to check. I'm getting antsy in my pantsy.

me too!
i just checked it and i'm still 384...i'm restarting my router like crazy!!
i have torrents waiting..:D

nope, i'm also still waiting!
called them this morning and they said they are still busy setting it up..
basically, don't call us, we will call you!
i just bought a ****load of discount bandwidth from Afrihost at R14-50/ gb just now!

They just do a firmware upgrade on your DSLAM and your good to go.
However make sure they order is completed otherwise it wont be actioned.

Sweet, got home from work and found my updgrade has been done! Only thing now is I cant seem to connect to my Axxess local account. Weird. I see that international is slow again with the cable issues, but downloading locally at 400KB/s+ Sweet!

EDIT: My new speedtest http://www.speedtest.net/result/706099437.png

how long did it take them to upgrade your line ?

Phoned on Tuesday morning and was active yesterday afternoon/evening. My local connection is working now (think it was an issue with axxess). One thing that is bothering me is that its taking longer to connect now, but suppose thats not really an issue if my line speed is 10X faster:)

thinking of moving my line to 4mb/s :)
At the end of January my line was down due to some hectic damage by rain in the area, and when it was fixed up i had an attainable rate of 9200kbps, but then it rained again and it dropped to 3200kbps for some reason :( its at 4400kbps at the moment.
Would the rain be causing these jumps in the attainable rate? and would telkom have to come fix it... oh, and my connection also dies when there's too much rain :(
I don't want to pay for the service if i'm only gonna be using the full speed for half the month

I'm also thinking of going over to 4mb at end of January
This is what my modem says
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 23.8 17.0
Attenuation (dB): 41.0 21.5
Output Power (dBm): -0.8 4.4
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 7552 820

Damm that probably means no 8mb or 12mb for me when the free upgrades comes : (

Tell me guys, is it really worth it?
I mean, looking at the price difference from 384 and the bandwidth high prices, does one have to add another factor that will surely increase his/her monthly bw usage? 4meg is quite fast, 8 should be very fast and 12 is probably out of my reach. I'm not a gamer, I just surf and download. I have a very tight budget, but I do sometimes go over my 20 local gigs even though I have 384; now just imagine if I had 4meg. Maybe I lack discipline. I'm tempted to get this, especially with these upgrades being offered, but I don't want to use up a lot of this expensive bw. Maybe I should lay low and see if we won't get better uncapped acc this years.

If you're like me, then 4mbit is definitely the way to go. Cap doesn't bother me because I never download more than 30GB a month anyway.
I just like the speed of it. I hated having to wait 2 hours to download a radio rip or whatnot.

I got fed up mainly with software updates, and because I run linux, I end up downloading a lot of big iso files too. Now what used to take me an entire night to download, finishes in 30 minutes. I'm not worried about cap too much - most of my large files come off local only anyway and thats cheap. And one more thing - I can now watch Youtube without the "quickly pause it so it can finish buffering" issue, that also now seems to be coming off local servers so hurrah!

Oh okay, then I should consider upgrading very soon and hope that I will get the automatic bump to 8 and/or 12. But I hope I will have discipline not to over read the "news" on SAIX, otherwise will be doomed. :D

EDIT: Do you think Billion 400G supports >=4Meg speed?

Can't wait to upgrade myself. Did you find your usage skyrocketed? That's whats holding me back

Upgraded from 384 to 4MB this morning - will NEVER go back to 384 again. It's so worth it. I am not a gamer or heavy downloader - download a handful of series episodes a week. But being able to download AND still surf the net at the same time is magic......... I am one happy bunny today :)

Wow, you are a lucky 'bunny'! I applied Monday and they told me to call them today coz they still want to check if my neighbourhood supports the speed. Good thing though is that they gave me a ref number. Can't wait to get home and find out.

Yeah I was really surprised it happened so fast - took 45min from first phone call to it changing on my line. I actually didn;t get a reference number when i ordered the upgrade because their systems were sow or some k@k... so i called back after half an hour and asked for my reference number. Then I logged into my modem just to take a peak and my connection had already been bounced and I was then on 4MB....... super smooth service from Telkom.... I am astounded!
