Hi,

This might be total noob question but what are the expected speeds of a 4mb line?
Speed tests in the evening give me just over 1MB and during the day I'm lucky to hit 600kb.
Browsing feels like my old 384k line and downloads are worse off peaking at less than 20kBps speeds but the funny thing is if I torrent a file I can get my speed to sky rocket all the way up 250kBps.
Anyone know if this is an ISP problem( Web Africa in my case) or a telkom one? I've tried a telkom account which gets better speeds but not by much (1,5MB Speed test).
Any ideas on what to do would be appreciated!
Thanks!

you probably just have congested exchange , so everyone is fighting for bandwidth in your area.

You're probably on a congested exchange. Save some cash and downgrade to 1meg.

Web Africa seems to have some problems recently with some ADSL clients getting low bandwidth usage from their accounts. There is a thread about this running at the moment. Also on their forums.

Though if this is also happening on your telkom line, the problem as mentioned are most likely at your exchange. But call whoever you are leasing your line from. And have them test it.

Oh, btw I get around 3.6mb on my 4mb line. with 0.3mb upload

Got telkom and web Africa on it to see where the problem lies now, surprisingly Telkom is giving better service than Web Africa in sorting it out!

Well it will depend on who you are paying for the line rental. WA can't do much if it's a telkom line, accept for reporting it same as you did.

I ordered a 4Meg link.
Telkom installed it, I used it for 2 weeks and complained, it was slow.
Telkom came out last week, did something and left.

on www.speedtest.net I now get 8.7 meg download and 817KB upload. (to Vodacom)
They obviously moved me to 10meg ADSL.

I'm not complaining.

(am in North Riding)

On a 4mbps line you can expect around 420KBps (= 3.3mbps) average. Upload is around 50KBps.

Unless you're on mweb uncapped today, today you're getting 10kbps download max.
