Lol!!! Ok I had a 384k Line and I sent in a form to upgrade my line to 4Mb service.... It took Telkom less than 24 Hours to change my line speed!! Isnt that brilliant? Im fooken impressed, and im synced at full 4MB, upload 512kb and my average download speeds during Unshaped hours is 400kb :D
Thank you Telkom, for once I say Thank you. Can finally do the things I want.

Hehe this was discussed in another thread. Took them one hour from phoning to have my line upgraded.

One thing they are VERY efficient with is turn on features that mean they can charge you more ;) Note to downgrade takes a month

I love my DSL 4Mbps too. I had initially decided to take it easy on my wallet and got DSL 384Kbps, but about a month later, I thought, "to Hell with it... I feel the need... the need for SPEED" :D I cannot believe I once used ISDN 128Kbps (paid R1000+/month to Telkom for it) and had endless issues.

Downgrade also costs you R110 (or something along those lines) - at least last time I checked.

magikn00b, why don't you try doing a speed test and posting your results?

4mb is the shiz, nothing better, I cant handle anything slower, I have 3 ppl using my 4mb to play bf2 at the same time, all getting pings around 30ms, my mate who has a 384kb gets a 40 ping with only 1 person on the line :D

I still need to get a 4mb line. :/ 384kbps can do for now.

come over to the dark side and you will never go back, once you see something downloading at 400kb/s the bug has bitten and you will accept nothing less!!

i really do wish SA would get the internet we have here.. 4mb is fast but wait till you have tried 24mb OMG.. guess you guys will get there soon

I can top that - our work ADSL was upgraded today from 512kb to 4096kb in 15minutes:D

Upgrading a line is done very quickly. Installing the line for the first time is another matter altogether, unless you take the self-option. Another thing is to get through to their ADSL support.

Got my new line installed the day after I called Telkom.

I've been lurking on this thread and it's driving me crazy. I'm itching to up my 384, and you guys aren't helping one bit!

Well admittedly i couldnt test it sitting in rush-hour traffic exactly _when_ the change occurred :P

Yeah as I said, that usually happens when you go for the self-install, but if you didn't, then you're one in a million. Literally.

The speed with which the upgrade goes through, leads me to believe there isn't anything physical that needs to be done at the exchange, and it is merely activated by ticking a setting in the automated system.

What do they rest of you people think?

Yes, has to be. I doubt they have the manpower (or organisation) to upgrade people this quickly this consistently if it were a physical / call-out thing to each exchange. Unless of course they have trained monkeys (and Telkom has lots of these) sitting at each exchange to do the physical bit...

i also think this is how its done , btw why when telkom is on strike they dont upgrade all lines lol but it wont effect us the 4mb users:(

It is a setting. They usually do some sync tests to see if your line is able to get a consistent higher speed, and when it does, they upgrade the speed. You can ask them to do the sync tests while you are on the phone with them.

The lady I spoke to at the call centre told me that the upgrade would take 5 to 7 days because the technician would have to do the upgrade at the exchange. I did a speed test 15 minutes later and I was hitting 3.3Mbps.
