4mbps, 4gb+, unshaped ADSL

Hi all,

I've been asking around for pricing on a service that I need:

  • 4gb cap
  • 4mbps
  • unshaped
  • ADSL

Internet Solutions to date has offered the best price:

5GB ADSL Fibre Business Solution--R 1,500.00 (setup)--R 500.00 (monthly)
10GB ADSL Fibre Business Solution--R 1,500.00 (setup)--R 800.00 (monthly)

Is that any good?

I've also priced cybersmart, webafrica, b2e and axxess following the advice of http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=54472 and http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=83134

What would you guys recommend?

Setup fee????? Thats not right. But yes I suppose that price excludes the 4mb line a the line hire alone is about R400+ so you wanna tell me you paying for a 5GB less than R100? Hmmm
 
Just to let you know:

IS said that the above solution is a min of 12 month contract. The setup fee is because a router is included with the service, which you do have to use. Prices are excl. VAT.

Just regarding the contract: does this mean that you're stuck with the same service even while the telecomm. sector changes for the better (hopefully)?

By "Hire Line" I think cavedog may be referring to the cost of the line rental of the 4mb line itself. which is payable to Telscum every month - note that there is also the mandatory R111 ( or thereabouts) for the analogue (copper) line.

Regarding the contract - yes you will be stuck into it - even if (and when :rolleyes: *sighs* ) the telecomms landscape changes.
For the better... ? For that we'll have to wait and see ;)

So essentially, you would have to be off your rocker to take out a 12 month contract at this point in time. It's a fantastic service--so it's a pity.

I'll take a look at the Do 3 by Telkom. Apparently you don't have to take out a contract.

Its not a matter of being off your rocker I'd think...

If the service and pricing makes sense then why not.

Neotel will not be offering anything comparable to 4mb line speeds in the near future.

But as far as 4mb lines are concerned I'm not the most clued as I've only got the standard 384k line and not researched faster line speeds and associated offerings.

Necuno or gdiza might be peeps to probe in this regard as I think they're on 4mb ;)
 
Just an update on this thread for anyone who may need to know:

On Monday I spoke to the Telkom sales dept and asked them whether their 4mbps line is unshaped. After much confusion on the sales clerk's side, I was put through to a techie who was very helpful. He explained that:
  • The 4mbps line (and any line for that matter) is neither shaped nor unshaped. Lines are classified as open.
  • It is only your username and the service connected with it that is either shaped or unshaped. For instance, our username currently ends with @dsl512us.telkomsa.net. The 512us indicates that we are on an unshaped service.
  • It is possible to keep your unshaped service (including the capping restrictions therewith) and be on a 4mbps line. He said that it is therefore possible to have what may be defined as a custom package--which isn't actually advertised by Telkom.

So, yes, it is possible to get a 4mbps, 4gb+, unshaped ADSL service.
 
Hey guys,

So we have successfully been upgraded to 4mbps, unshaped, 4gb cap.

Doing a telkomsa.net speed test shows that we are getting download speeds of 400kb/s. However, on most (if not all) international sites, I don't get much past 50kb/s. Browsing seems to be faster though.

Does anyone know what might be happening?
 
Well, i would bitch like hell about that 50kb/s on int sites. Thats what a 512k gives you, so your 4mb line isn't performing.

anyhow quick question did you take out that fibre option with the 12 month contract?

I'm rather interested in that service but I can't seem to justify R1700 setup fee for a router that doesn't become mine once the contract expries...

No. I'm still with telkom. Just going through them. Not on a contract. But the whole thing lands up at about R900/mo excluding line rental (I think).
 
Are you sure you need unshaped? There are very few applications that it actually makes much difference for. And you can get any combination of line/cap anyway.

Yes we do. My dad works through a VPN which gets heavily shaped. So we have to have it.

His speed through the VPN (even on unshaped) is many times slower than when not connected through the VPN.

As a matter of interest, is there anything I can do to speed it up?
