Hi Guys

I moved from the crappy Cybersmart throttled all the way "uncapped" 1Mbps account to MWebs 1Mbps and was very happy with the choice even tho my Line is still with Cybersmart. Few months later Telkom upgraded all 1Mbps line users to 2Mbps so I upgraded to MWeb 2Mbps data package and was very satisfied.

But a few months later I realized that I'm paying a bit more compared to other ISP on the market.

My 2Mbps line rental is with Cybersmart current paying R248
MWeb 2Mbps data package is R369

R248 + R369 = R617!!!

And if I move my line from Cybersmart to MWeb the total price will be R599, which means MWeb 2Mbps Line price is R230

So from what I can see, MWeb data package prices are a bit higher than other ISP but their Line Rental prices are cheaper~

Example 4Mbps Line Rental Price:
  • Telkom is R425
  • and when I calculate it MWeb's Line price is R360
  • WA is R400
  • Cybersmart is R425

I wanted to Upgrade to a 4Mbps now, SO my question is Which ISP offers the Cheapest 4Mbps Uncapped Data + Line price?

My average usage is about 130gb, with the highest 200gb a month. With average 30% of the total GB used are Uploads.

My Main activities are streaming videos, direct download, torrent download/upload, online gaming, and then the regular usage such as email, browsing etc.

Therefore what i'm looking for is, an ISP that Does Not Throttle the user, Great service, Best Price and Performance package, Uncapped and reliable.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think the cheapest you can get for 4Mbps line and 4Mbps uncapped would be R648

Openweb Vanilla Polar 4Mbps Uncapped R289 + Axxess 4Mbps adsl line rental R359 = R648

http://www.openweb.co.za/
https://www.axxess.co.za/adslline

How is Openweb? OR should I say How is the Vanilla Polar package? Can it handle a heavy download traffic? Because I download 24/7

Axxess only have upto 10Mbps Line rental option which includes the 4Mbps, and from what I understand, I can upgrade my data package to 10Mbps anytime I want?

8am till 5pm weekdays your internet is dead, after 5 you can use it.

Well, been with Mweb for more than a year and was pretty happy, but has moved to Telkom a few days ago (due to better pricing). 24/7 downloads might become a problem, but so far really happy with my usage pattern (downloads are fast and youtube does not buffer on 720p on 4Mbps uncapped - 6Mbps line).

All in for R850 (voice, adsl rental and uncapped). But your milage may vary...

Was looking at Afrihost,
"For our high bandwidth users users, non-Realtime Internet traffic (such as torrents) will be dynamically shaped during peak network (08h00 and 0h00 every day) usage so that congestion can be prevented and a good overall quality of service can be guaranteed. During non-peak usage, everyone (even the highest bandwidth users) will get as close to full speeds on ALL types of traffic (Realtime and non-Realtime) as the network will allow."

8am till midnight is quite long...so during those time my torrent either upload or download will basically be dead? But other downloads will be running close to line speed.

I wonder if this happens to WA as well? Because WA is only R339 compared to AH R397

I would go for do3 uncapped which is R699 and includes 4 meg line rental and uncapped and its full speed anytime and you can download as much as you want :D.

hmm...sounds very interesting, but I don't get the +148.37 Line rental per month fee on of the R699??
also, telkom has bad reviews from users

Nah if you get Telkom uncapped for R699 you will be sorted.... Best out there. Ive been using it since launch and its the best by far. Low ping for gaming and full speed on torrents during the day and night aswell as usenet.

Do not give an ISP responsibility over your line!!!

Really? It is something like R15 a month more to keep your line rental with Telkom. That way you get to decide what ISP to use when, and you don't have a contractual obligations to keep your line with an ISP you don't want to. You have no concept of the term "headache" until you have to try move line rental from one ISP to another. It literally takes 3 months. So don't do it. Keep line rental with Telkom.

You'll thank me later.

You will always pay R148.37 for the telephone line no matter what option you choose which is seperate to the Adsl one.

Plus one.

This is unfortunately not true anymore.
On a 4Mbps line you are looking in the region of 320GB.

So basically, I should just move my line from Cybersmart back to Telkom and keep it there. Which means I'm paying R425 for the 4Mbps line rental fee. Instead of R360 from Axxess

I've read from other threads, it seems that OpenWeb Silver/Gold account is the best solution for a heavy downloader/gamer, since their line are Semi-shaped/High priority over network.
Basically I'm now looking for a ISP that can offer me the most data usage without been "managed" by them.

If I keep my line with Telkom R425

Telkom Do Broadband 4Mbps - R699 package.
Afrihost 4Mbps Uncapped - R822
WebAfrica 4Mbps Uncapped - R764
MWeb Premium 4Mbps - R964
OpenWeb Silver 4Mbps - R1024

But if I gave my line to Axxess to manage R360 (R65 saved)

Afrihost 4Mbps Uncapped - R757
WebAfrica 4Mbps Uncapped - R699
MWeb Premium 4Mbps - R899
OpenWeb Silver 4Mbps - R959

Lastly I forgot to mention, My dad is paying for the Line and I'm paying for the ISP data package fee. Therefore It isn't really a problem if my dad pays R425 4Mbps Telkom line rental price (currently paying R248) . But for me, currently paying R369 (MWeb Premium 2Mbps uncapped) and was trying to upgrade with a budget limit to +/- R450 per month.

Anyways, right now I'll just have to wait for Cybersmart to move my 2Mbps Line, and upgrade it to a 4/10Mbps line with Telkom, then I can decide which ISP i'm going for.

Could also be a nice alternative to telkom uncapped. Runs on afrihost backbone and its not that heavily shaped as it used to be in the past.

BTW I had my line with saol.com

I sent them 1 email. I told them this is my official 30 day notice to cancel my services with them and I WANT my line to be transfered back to telkom. I never heard anything from them but they did transfer it back to telkom without any issues or me even have to phone them at all.

I decided to let Cybersmart keep my line for now and requested an Upgrade on Sunday, and Monday morning they already send a request to telkom about the upgrade. Quite efficient I guess.

Also, I tried to cancel my MWeb account, send them an email to [email protected] requesting a cancellation form. I did get a reference number...but thats it...

so what the cheapest but not throttled 4mb option? i mostly download via HTTP ....
