South Africa's majestic Soccer City Stadium, venue for both the opening and final match of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™, has won rave reviews from Fifa president Sepp Blatter, who described it as "a five-star stadium" and one of the most beautiful in the world.

Speaking during the official stadium hand-over ceremony in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning, Blatter said Soccer City – which resembles an African calabash with its round shape and charming patchwork of colours – was "one of the best venues" in the world.

"This is a great day for Fifa, to be here at this magnificent stadium," Blatter said. "The minister of sport, Mr Stofile, said Soccer City is the flagship for South Africa and the African continent. I will go further and say this stadium is a flagship of the world.

The most watched sporting event on the globe requires a world-class broadcast solution, and the opening of South Africa's International Broadcast Centre has provided just that.

"I am confident that the coverage and images from South Africa will be the most advanced and will reach and be enjoyed by more people than ever before in the history of the tournament," Fifa president Sepp Blatter said at the opening of the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

"Football and television is something that goes together like a great story. You [the broadcasters] need a spectacular, you need emotion, and you need a show. And this is what football is offering you."

Situated in a 30 000 square metre compound at the Nasrec Expo Centre, just a few hundred metres from Soccer City stadium, hundreds of broadcasters from around the world are preparing to beam the story of Africa's first Fifa World Cup from the IBC to an expected cumulative television audience of over 26-billion.

The intensity level is increasing day by day at the stadium... everyone knows what is expected and is going about their jobs. We all know that the first match day is going to be manic. No one has experience of a world cup here.... we are ready though! Bring it on! Volunteer shifts run from 7am to 2am on match days! :)

So, when is it moving to Australia? :p

I really can't wait, 11 June I'll be watching Bafana beat Mexico, and then on 12 June it's my first WC game at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. :)

They better hurry! They are running out of time to get all the equipment moved! Kilometres of cabling. Tonnes of generator equipment. Thousands of electronic units (TVs, computers, two way radios, switches etc etc). Never mind the sponsored cars and buses! :)

Well I would have assumed that most people would have realised what I was referring to given the 8 day countdown but in future I will remember to cover all intelligence levels ;)

Just to add to the comments earlier about world cups....

"'The World Cup final has the single largest global audience in sports,' Kevin Alavy, a senior analyst for the media agency Initiative Futures Worldwide, said from London. 'It doubles the audience for the Olympic opening ceremony in Athens and triples the Super Bowl.'"

The most watched sporting event in the world is soccer (European Football). To give you an idea of how popular it is, the 2006 world cup final drew 716 million viewers. While the whole tournament attracted 30+ billion non-unique viewers.

Wooh,8 days, and we still got denmark on saturday, excited for that too.

7 days... looking forward to it.

Nah, wrong.... ;)

By the way, I am basing it on my ability to count. Most countdowns now are saying 9 days... but I fail to see how that works out.... let's look at the days of the month below from the 1st to the 11th (kick off)

1 June 10 days to go
2 June 9 days to go
3 June 8 days to go
4 June 7 days to go
5 June 6 days to go
6 June 5 days to go
7 June 4 days to go
8 June 3 days to go
9 June 2 days to go
10 June 1 day to go
11 Kick off!

They use hours too, so I assume that is what throws out their numbers.

3rd June = 8 days

Hey don't tell Channel 9 here in Australia.

They advertised "The biggest sporting Television event this year...right on channel 9". I thought, huh? "when did they get the TV rights to WC?"

Then I saw the rest of it " The Commonwealth Games, live from Delhi":wtf:

Most of the coverage here has been about Australia and in the general news, the reporters over there are filling in time by filing negatrive reports- crime etc etc

At least they weren't refering to the AFL Grand Final.

Hey guys,

Not sure if this has been asked / discussed elsewhere, but are we allowed to bring cameras into the stadiums? I really want to bring mine along, but if it is not allowed then it will surely be bounced at the entrance. Anyone know?
