80gig You Are Disgusting

Why do you insist on being able to use more than what you paid for? FFS you only paid for 3gig.

...maybe because we're paying 1000% more than anywhere else in the world purely because Telkom is an anticompetitive monopoly and there is no other choice of ultimate bandwidth carrier? Does it surprise you that ppl may try to get more out given this unfair scenario?

Wow we are being hostile now arn't we?
Please watch your language this is a respectable forum and we don't appreciate that type of attitude. :D

So we all become thieves instead ?

If users exploit loopholes in Telkom's infrastructure for more bandwidth, is that any different to Telkom exploiting South African telecoms legislation for more money? If Telkom's capping system doesn't work for my account and I end up using more than 3GB, I think it's a bit harsh to call me a thief. I mean, I could send the data back to them on DVD, if that would make you feel better :)

Well said - everyone who wants the same sort of service thats expected abroad should just bugger off out of SA and leave us to fall even further behind.

Maybe we should start a DVD pigeon service, that way we can transfer Gigabytes of data without being called thieves

If you knowing exceed your 3gb then you ARE a thief. Telkom alows and makes provision for you going over by a bit, cause of the 12/24 hour cycle thing. But when you make it your mission in life to download as much junk as you can just to shaft it to the big 'ol monopoly, then my my man, in my book youre a thief!

Its not a loophole at all. On telkomsa.net's home page they spell it out - all the users in each bandwidth category are lumped together and once the average for that group exceeds the bandwidth category (eg 3gb) then capping will take place.

In other words - If you've got 1000 x 3gb users then there is a pool of 3000gb available for everyone in that group. There might be 250 x 4gb account users and they would have 1000gb available. Now it would make sense that in that group there are high end users and there are low end users. Hopefully it will all average out.

So basically put, a guy who used 80 gb in the above scenario is using my bandwidth to do it. What happens if the 3000GB b/w is used up, what happens to the user that has used 2.5GB, he gets capped at 3GB but Johnny over there had the luxury of 80 GB which was not paid for at the current price I pay for it.

Obelix - Its hard to be called a thief, when stealing from a greater thief(Telkom)

Technically I see it as the infamous Apartheid, Digital Apartheid and Telkom is the oppressor in this situation.

There is no Democracy in the Telecoms sector, and its ruled by a big-ape-hand dictator aka Telkom Shareholders and investors.

Look at the "overusage users" as simple people of the country fighting for their right to be free.

If you can see it in this context, you would understand why nowadays users would simply use more bandwidth when given the chance, not because they have to most of the time, but because Telkom put them in this psychological warfare of capping. If a user can get more usage, he will simply do it now because he can.

Garp makes an excellent point. Once fiber or copper has been laid down it is there for 20 or 30 years, it is a once off cost. Telkom has been hammering and brainwashing us for years into believing 3 gigs is more than enough bandwidth, and that going over that amount is abuse.

I really am sick and tired of Telkom's Bullsh*t. I say if you are with Telkom as an ISP, then go ahead and download as MUCH AS YOU CAN, because in reality it will cost Telkom exactly the same whether you download 200 gigs, or 3 gigs. In reality you arent "stealing" anything.

From the what it says on the page I would suspect that he would be hardcapped. Everyone would still get their allotted 3gb.

The system seems to work on the principle that some people are simply not going to use anywhere near their purchased amount and it lets others use it instead of it remaining un-used.

Anyway - thats my take on the available info.

BTW - it would seem like an unusually good system (for telkom at least) if it works.

I would like to believe we've become conscience users of an overpriced under bundled product. If you wish to call these people thieves so be it.

I just cant quiet understand the argument of having to move to another country to enjoy international norms, doesn't that just make your argument moot.

Its still theft and i will not have, but while that is the way were trying to fight it, were never going to get anywhere, because the finger will just get shoved back in our faces.
I have a 10Gig account and never reach my limit. I could if i wanted to, but i dont want to my ISP in the situation where he has to account for unpaid traffic. At the end of the day the ISP's are going to suffer. You honestly think Telkom is going to let that overusage just go by ? Someone is gonna pay for it.

Yes well since telkom is the ISP they are going to pay for it.
If I was with another ISP I would never screw them like that and stay within my bandwidth limit.

Okay, but what about all the thousands of users who use less than 3GB? If I use less than my monthly free minutes on my MTN or Vodacom contract, they accumulate. Why don't Telkom and the second tier ISP's work the same way? I suspect that Telkom scores big time from the majority who use less than 3GB and this more than covers the few who download more.

In fact, I'd like Telkom to account for the underused bandwidth on some of my accounts.

Then u phone telkom and complain.

The problem is that I dont see what I'm doing as abuse, so in my books I've done nothing wrong.
Sure Telkom will say that downloading more than 3GB is abuse but thats Telkom and if you choose to believe them thats your problem not mine.
:D

Point taken Bwana - I am not going to go mud slinging in this here thread but the level of discussions in this forum (ADSL General Discussions) has really de-generated the last few months to people whining that they were capped at 3.5gb and the others who boast that they are on 80 gb and still going strong.
We all know what we all feel about Telkom but this forum has become just a continual whining place for posts of the latter. I have no problem if a person d/loads 80gb above his allocated limit if it is used for business purposes or for development etc but you are now getting people d/loading just for the sake of breaking their cap and to see by how much they can do it and then it gets posted here.
I do not read half the posts on this sub forum anymore - in the beginning it was different but the same old junk keeps on being posted over and over and the same old replies are also continually being made to the same old posts.
It is no wonder that I am hanging out on other forums more and more these days.
I am not flaming anyone - I am just expressing myself as everyone else is.

It's not that some folks choose to abuse the system or not. I reckon ADSL users fall into three categories:

1. Businesses using dsl for everything from basic connectivity to hosting their email server and corporate website(s), VOIP and VPN's and are just trying to operate an competitive internet connected business for the lowest possible expense.
2. Heavy technically oriented private users who download games, videos, music, use p2p apps, skype, play online, stream media, etc.
3. The affluent guy/gal/family who wants permanently online internet as it's the latest thing and who really only ever use it for email and browsing.

I really don't think there is a defined group of users out there who set out to "steal" as much bandwidth as possible as an end in itself. They're all just trying to accomplish something else primarily, and if they find a way of using more than 3GB, I doubt they give a damn about some technicality on Telkom's part about the quantity of electrons they can get through their modem in a month.
