Silly question perhaps, what is "backhaul"?

Backhaul is the link or links between your local exchange and the core of the network.
E.g. You have 100 people in your area and all have a 1mb line from their house to the exchange, i.e 100mb of traffic should be supplied. However, if the exchange only has 50mb of bandwidth, the backhaul is too small to allow everyone their 1mb limit and people will experience a degraded service.

I take it you dont like Telkom much Drake ?

I don't think much about them.

But seriously, am I supposed to wee in my pants over some failed testing ?
The way they are carrying on one would think they're inventing ADSL.

a) they buy hardware from said supplier
b) said supplier comes out and shows them to plug the green plug into the green socket and the blue plug into the blue socket and the thing with 3 plugs into the wall.

Explain what there is to test about that? Why are they still at testing phase, this should be at rollout phase.

Seems the timing is all more to do with the elections and this article

It's all smoke and mirrors.

HISTORY

They ran xDSL trails in 2000 already. Could do 8Mb in the labs with ADSL, and 4Mb up/down on SDSL. They opted however to do nothing a that stage. They could have already predicted what size of backbone would be required to carry that amount of data. They waited until it had to be done, and then only did the minimum. They could have done it right the first time, in order to have to do only minor updates now to get to ADSL2+.

Hi "Nod"

When exactly was this - historically -- was it before during or after part of Telkom got sold to the Americans and Malaysians -- who had a 30% stake but appointed ALL the top brass -- Apparently

I WISH someone in the know would write a GOOD business type book about TELKOM -- the whole history of the organisation -- in detail.

The only one I have been able to find is titled "CROSSED LINES" done by somebody KAPLAN who was a lecturer at UCT ( if memory is correct )

Telkom are busy with upgrades, which is nice. They could, however, have been much further along had they done this a few years ago. They ran xDSL trails in 2000 already. SDSL is still in use, don't know whether it is internal or external though.

The reason why they did 'nothing' is because of return on investment. You bleed the assest you have and make maximum profit out of them for as long as you can before you do anything else. You don't want 'assests' that are not generating revenue for you. If I have no competition I would also sell 'less' at a 'higher' price, I'm here to make money after all.

It's fine to blame Telkom but you must realise that they were given a license to print money by the government of the day. If you wan't to blame someone blame the government & icasa (same thing) as they are the ones that artificailly created the current day telecomms environment in SA. Telkom is just playing by the rules perscribed to them.

SDSL is only used internally, if at all. Would be ideal for SMME's instead of diginet lines.

Like I said: "government allowed them to do it".

If I had not forgotton all of the names & absolute BS in that company I could have probably written that book for you. It's just not something worth remembering and this was during the busy times from listing on JSE to SBC selling their stake :D

8 meg all good and well, but besides the small caps we have, what about the forced shaping we have to deal with? Yes I know you can buy an unshaped thing, but at twice the price. So what good would it do really?

Make no mistake, I really really need a 8 meg line, with a much higher upload speed than 512, but still makes me wonder why we pay what we pay anyway. You get a "up to" 4 meg line, pay for it, and then to be able to get anything near that line speed for downloads, you have to pay a premium to your ISP in order to get what you have already paid for.

Wow, now even Telkom is complaining about Telkom's inability to deliver backhaul. :D

I remember @ the 2008 MyADSL conference when Rikus Matthyser was whining about the problems that Telkom Media had in delivering IP TV and he said that "there simply wasn't enough bandwidth to the home to service IPTV".

I had to bite my lip at that point not to pipe up and shout "And who's fault is THAT?"....

If I remember correctly they had those investors already during these trails. It was known as the "PMA" trail, and consisted of a few vendors (Siemens, Motorola, etc.) Telkom however opted to cancel the tender. All vendors lost a lot of money, as equipment had to be imported to do the tender.

Quick question.. Can you phone telkom and ask them if you can trail 8mb if you on 4mb, or are they trailing it themselves:confused::confused:

SYNCHRONOUS DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE

I understand the bit about the UP & Down being synchronous -- but after that WHY

You will still not get any FIXED IP's  and still have all the other drawbacks of DSL ( contention )

MW

A fixed ip is not the end of the world. You could always use dynamic dns for your server (mail, web, etc). Cheap office to office VPN connections for non-critical applications. There are a lot of applications for this type of connection.
