8ta 7.2mbps dongle - no stock.

8ta does not have stock of this and apparently its a countrywide problem.At the speeds I'm getting on a 21mbps modem I'm not prepared to fork out R700 on another one.
What else can I use, because Vodacom's dongles are locked?

Please advise which Telkom/8ta stores are close to you and we can find out which store has stock of the device?

Voda is not locked. I set up my voda one last night to use a 8ta card and worked perfectly. You just need to update the software and the dial in software.
 
As far as I know, it is illegal in SA to sell locked phones and modems. Yours should work fine on 8ta - although you might need to change the firmware. My Cell C 21 Mbps E1820 modem is working great with 8ta......so is my E586 MiFi (bought from 3 in UK) which I bought back from London in January.
 
Hey, been having the same problem! In my case the 21mbps modem would not work with my router hence it was definitely not an option.

After searching many Telkom direct stores in JHB it seems nobody has stock of the 7.2 (e173) modem and there is no expected arrival date.

Vodacom seem to still be selling locked modems and I was warned by a few people not to buy them as I would have endless trouble trying to use my 8ta sim in it.

A forumite suggested mitabyte.co.za - ordered my unlocked e173 today for R449 with free delivery in 2 days (?)
 
As mentioned before its only the Vodacom software that you can't use to connect to other networks.
With a 8ta sim in a Vodafone modem just use windows connection or MDMA.

If its a Huawei modem most times you can reflash the firmware so the modem reports itself as a Huawei modem rather than a Vodafone modem - once that's done you can use any Mobile Partner dash.

mikaMe what 21mbps modem are you talking about?
If its Huawei one possibly its saying its a Vodafone K**** that the router doesn't know anything about but if you de-brand it so it reports as a Huawei E**** it might be differant.
If its a ZTE modem - i pass

If your having to stick with using Voda software & connecting by Windows you can check your 8ta balance by SMS by opening the Voda SMS program/settings - select "custom" & enter +27829129
The SMS function will now work with 8ta sim.
Send a blank SMS to 188 & it will return your balance.

There are reports about Cell C 3GB for 12 months package with modem for R599. It gives modem for R200. Most probably 7.2Mbps. It could be ZTE though.

It is a ZTE 7.2Mbps modem but it works perfectly with 8ta, I even use the Cell C connection manager with the 8ta sim in and it works perfectly.
 
I have been waiting since November last year (2011) for the Telkom Shop in Midlands Mall Pietermartizburg to get stock of any of their modems~!

Every time i go there they have nothing...

I need the Huawei Router and the 7.2mbps sticks!!
 
Looks like the same design as E353 (21Mbps)
14.4Mbps, 900MHz UMTS and external antenna connector
If you bought one, please confirm above.

Good modem and value @R399, I recommend it. It should take less power than 21Mbps modems, good for routers (assuming it is included on the compatibility list).

Pepcell has the E153 3.5Mbps for R349.

If my maximum speed at any given time is 2.5Mbps will I still get this speed is I use this modem?

I'm currently using a 21.1mbps speedstick and I never go beyond 3Mbps so it makes sense you use a lower speed dongle if I'm going to experience the same speed.Here's the link to that promo:

Nope... it does not work like that. With the "lower speed dongle" you will probably get an even weaker signal.

Not true. Older modems with fully analog high frequency filters and preamps have better sensitivity and noise levels, top-shelf models definitely. Cheapo modems not a chance. E153 is one of them, not a good deal.
Price for E352 is very good, highly recommended.

I was not referring to the old stuff...

Agree with the E352... might even go pick up one as a spare!
