Howdie.

I signed up for the 24 month contract and I bought the Huawei E1820 modem from the 8ta Store.
Needless to say, I am very unsure about the product. More to the point is the speed I am getting.

Now I have seen other folks on this forum getting download speeds of 6.00 mb/s on the E 220
modem. That performance is superior to mine by far.Is there anything I can do to improve this
as I like to game online and I have very unreliable performance.I use my Playstation mainly but
I do have the odd Call of Duty PC match.

Gaming is not the only reason. I feel the speed advertised and experienced by others is far greater
than mine.If I applied for the Non Roaming option, Would that help ?

If these are the normal speeds, Is there anything I can do to Improve them ?

Thanks.

Its weird that you have such good ping yet such poor download speeds.....

How many times have you run the test ?

I only have two bars on my signal Indicator and It normally says my signal is fair.

You probably live on the cell edge. My speeds are similar to yours, but I knew that I'm on the edge even before I got the contract. If you really want to, you can buy an external omni to increase your signal strength. It might help you a bit.

As for roaming - the Internet 5 offer isn't using roaming at all.

I get those speeds with 1-2 bars strength and similar pings. If I move to it a place with 4-5 bars, it jumps to nearly 6Mb/s.

It is definitely a signal strength issue. Where is the OP on the i5promo coverage map? I find that in my study I get max speeds around 2-3mbps, but if I move to the dining room, i can get up to 5mbps. I am on the very edge of a cell. Unfortunately, any 3G network will not be able to give people on the edge of the cell the higher speeds, even with good signal.

Bear in mind that your speeds should improve as the 8ta network expands in the coming months and coverage improves.

You can try a bolt on antenna (lucky that the E1820 modem has a threaded external antenna connection). Try companies like poynting and get a panel antenna. Try to point it in different directions until you get the best signal as it is difficult to figure out where the base station is. Needless to say, mounting this outside will give best results.

I will try the antenna. I hope it boosts my strength and thus the speed.

my download goes up to almost 13mbps, my upload goes up to 3mbps and almost 4mbps alot it stays above 2mbps. my ping local is always between 45-55ms, international ping is 250ms.
i played halo reach campaign:D last night with 3 of my buddies on xbox live and i was hosting the game, and there was completely NO LAG AT ALL! i loved it!.

awe crap my link not working :( . hope this works

sorry to jack this, but just a quick question.

Can I use a cell c sim in the modem as well? or is it locked to an 8ta sim?

I have found that the 21.6mbps modems have poor antenna design; there speeds suffer in weak signal. But the 7.2mbps modems perform better in weak signal conditions..... Just what i have experienced.

try this link. hope this works.
anyway @ Joepeach, do you use a 3g router to connect to PSN? if you do, then go to your 3g router bandwidth controll panel, then bandwidth controll settings, there it will say EGRESS Bandwidth mean uploading
INGRESS Bandwidth mean downloading
now type in Egress bandwidht 5076 (acording to what your upload speed is of you 3g modem)
type in Ingress bandwidth 21004.
this is almost like unlocking the speeds on your 3g router, i have a TP-link MR3420 3g router.
no one could help me with my speeds not even 8ta not even pc guys could help me, i was struggling for 2 weeks! i found this out myself.
here is a link of how my speeds looked a week ago

you should also get a antenna booster kit try www.dbg.co.za

That just makes me depressed. Your speeds are wicked. I am not using a router, I just plug my PS3 into my PC via ethernet and
share the connection.Man, you have awesome speed. Where do you live in terms of coverage ?
