I get a constant 5 out of 5 lights. I’m about 600 meters from the tower with good line-of-sight. I have noticed that the speed varies quite a bit. Here are some speedtest.net results:

HTTP and FTP downloads average at about 1.5 MB/s and uploads at about 750 KB/s. With torrents I get a peak of 3.6 MB/s with a well seeded file but this fluctuates greatly and yesterday I was only able to get an average of about 500 KB/s.

Currently appears that SIM is not LTE enabled only WCDMA; However even WCDMA is working better that my normal connection:

Tried to connect at a meeting in Bryanston tonight got 0.01MB down and 0MB up, obviously very little coverage there. Ping was over 600.

Hope this paints a picture of how distance influences speed/latency.

I have three blue bars on my modem even though I can see the tower about 300m away.
 
8ta have activated the LTE on the SIM and the performance is.. well mind-blowing...

I'm not having a great experience (yet) with LTE. I'll need to get in contact with 8TA to see what is the issue.
Location - Kemptonpark, probably 500m from the tower.
Device - Huawei B593
Signal - 3 bars

I've tried an external directional antenna (Frequency Range: 800-960 / 1710-2500 MHz, Gain:7dBi) , but it did not seem to make a difference. (tried it on both ports at the back)
Connection keeps dropping, very unstable.

There is a note if you trawl the google that some of the b593 units don't switch to the external antenna reliably, there is actually a firmware update in Sweden to correct by providing manual control over external antenna.....

Are you sure the SMA connector or cables are not damaged?

you ideally also require clear line of sight to the tower and no visual obstructions from the antenna's point of view of installation - height helps ...
