8ta speeds suck! Report here... [solved!]

Weirdness continues...
Stuck at home with car issues and decided to help my rising blood pressure by testing speeds, again...

The Rosebank and Pretoria tests yield similar results.

Torrent speeds avg 10kbps (and rising slowly).

WIll test 8ta with Vodacom 7.2 modem over the weekend (and if all goes well with a 21 modem next week).

I suspect that 8ta's towers aren't very happy with 7.2 modems and that torrents are in fact shaped in certain areas.

My connection is horribly broken, constant timeouts (not torrents, just browsing), can't even get past a ping test on speedtest.net and I have a 21mbps modem :(

Experiencing poor speeds in jhb cbd too, from a good 5mbps to less than 1mbps,with constant disconnects as well.I have sent them two mails already no replies nothing

1mbp is still good, I get less than 10kbps (if I get any at all), don't actually get modem disconnects and my signal is good and connected HSDPA

I had the guys from 8ta over yesterday to check my coverage and what has basically happened with most of us is, that 8ta is set up to use the most stable signal not the fastest, thats why you could get 99% signal but only 10kb downloads.

The nearest tower to my house is about 500m, this tower however is in a dip, and I am on top/on the other side of a hill, supposedly not providing a stable signal, therefore I am connected to another tower about 2.3km away as it is at a higher elevation level than my house, and therefore should provide a more stable signal, this is therefore the dominating tower from my house. Whenever someone connects/uses the 1st tower(500m) and they get a more stable signal from that, I get bumped to the second one(2.3km). Thats why the speeds could also improve every now and then depending on how many people are using the 1st tower.

The guy further told me that they have only about 1000 out of 4000 planned towers online, and with the extra network traffic it was not enough to provide stable signals for all the users.

I was also told that 8ta would install a booster at my house, to stablise my signal and therefore I will be able to access the fastest tower(closest) to my house. This could however take some time and I would appreciate it if the 8ta rep on this forum could contact me about the situation.

I really hope the booster will fix the issues I have been experiencing, but I guess only time will tell.

So they sold beyond capacity, surely there should be some kind recourse against this businees practice?

I agree there should be something, the guys doing the technical services are not from 8ta but service providers, so I tend to believe them more than the actual 8ta guys.

Spoken to a guy that installs cell towers today.

He said that it is shocking to see how many towers have loose cables. At some sites he manages to pull out all the cables just by brushing against them with his leg! :wtf:

Also heard that maintenance is scheduled for towers end of November - we'll have to see if this happens or changes anything...

As for now I'm going to test the speeds using the above mentioned USB Repeater cable.

If this fail, I'll have to use my 8ta 10Gb when I visit my brother-in-law and also enjoy 600-800kbps downloads... :D

i wont have any problems with my 8ta 3g in dbn hopefully next year...

OR ELSE

I live in the Woodmead area. My signal strenght seems to vary a lot. I thinking of getting a repeater cable. Do you think that it is worth it?

That is unlikely to help. If anything you would need an external antenna, like a directional or omni-directional one, to get you better signal strength. However I am not convinced this may solve all the problems being experienced with 8ta lately. They seem to have some core network failures for the problems with speeds and quality of service to be so wide spread. Unfortunately we seem to be getting no info from them as to what the actual problems are and when they will be resolved. At the moment it seems to just be a case of sit and shush and we may at some point decide to fix it.

Well I hope it improves. I already cancelled my adsl.

I miss playing with 8ta in Durban. I'm on the 11th floor with direct line of site to the tower. 8-10 Mb/s was rocking. In Joburg I'm sitting right next to a huge iron deposit which is essentially a magnet and my signal fluctuates like Australia's batting line up!

I found this didn't work and actually increased the number of disconnects. What I have now done is purchase a Tenda 3G router (R240 including delivery) and a power extension cable. The router, with the 8.ta dongle now reside on the window sill for extra signal.

I'm getting between 4-6Mb/s download speeds on 35-50% signal strength. My upload speeds on Speedtest.net are really crap (0.14Mb/s) but when I do normal uploads, I get between 0.8-2.2Mb/s

The Repeater Cable was unfortunately wishful thinking...

All it does is extend the distance you can "swing" the modem to find a better spot.

I was at home yesterday and enjoyed some speed - got 45kbps avg download for my torrents (and thanks to Steam no more bandwidth...)

Anyhow, the problem with 8ta seems to be overcrowding of certain towers and thus a drop in speeds in those areas.

I still hope that it might be the 8ta branded modems (the 7.2 ones) that suck... :p

I doubt it, I am using a debranded Huawei E160 and the speds are still crap. Same modem with a Cell C flies.

I am in the Sunninghill area

These speeds are pathetic.

I think we should all start sending e-mails to Carte Blanche so that they could investigate this. It is in the publics interest so if enough complaints are logged on their website they will investigate and 8ta does not need bad publicity at this stage. You can submit a complaint under submit a story at www.carteblanche.co.za. We cannot just sit back and be screwed by 8ta. We can do something about it. I have logged a case on Tuesday with 8ta with my problems and have not heard anything from them since. It confirms what everybody else is saying on this form that they do not get a response from 8ta. I never had these type of problems with the Vodacom contract that I had. Now I have to spend precious time trying to sort out a connectivity problem that I am paying for.
