8ta speeds suck! Report here... [solved!]

My problems are also back again, constant disconnects and getting lost packets when I try a ping. So 8ta's solution was very temporary and now I'm being cheated again. And again no comment on why they demand clawback on all outstanding payments when the rep and the website, at the time, clearly claimed there was no clawback only the R800 cancellation fee!

The networks are deteriorating day by day, as you get busier with new customers the speed and quality gets worse.

It has now become unacceptable, Waverley & Craighall Park Jhb. I am using Huawei B660 & B683 modems, & external antennas

I have connected to different towers but the results are still the same down to 200 kbs. & intermittent, I believe that this is an overloaded network problem, selling services on a not ready network.

If this situation does not improve to at least a minimum of 2000 kbs continuous down & 750 kbs up in the next 60 days, I will be cancelling the contract & not paying the R800.00 cancellation fee.

Hoping something can be done to rectify this situation

I'm in Paulshof, 8ta coverage map shows me smack-dab in the middle of full 3g and 2g coverage, yet I'm getting this:

Good times.

8ta Dashboard says 5 bars .. ya.. right.

Trying a program called Mobile Data Monitoring Application (MDMA - I know right? lol), fastest connection I've had today - don't even get me started on last night. I was lucky to get 1 bar of WCMA (? - can't remember what the abbreviation is).

:(

Slightly Better:

.. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to go A LOT higher than 1.5mbps, correct? :/

Update: This on 4 bars:

Now websites don't load, random disconnects, slow browsing, can't play international online games... *sigh* Good job Telkom .. *thumbs up* .. Way to go. :(

Hi,
I have got 8ta 10 gig deal on 23rd this month with great expectations. But now i am very disappointed because of the speeds i get. I am using Cell C from last 12 months and i expected the 8ta to be much faster but it is not the case. My browsing experience seems to be o.k but video streaming on you tube is very slow. It takes forever just to watch 5 minutes of video. If i watch the video with Cell c it goes smooth without any buffering. Speedtest also sucks. Example speed test links below.

8ta rep,
Please help. I am in halfway house, Midrand.

Meh. I just set up a failover 3G modem with a 8.ta 10GB package sim because Telkom cannot reolve my ADSL line fault (it seems). 8.ta speeds are erratic and slooooooow. I don't need 5mbps... If I could get 1.5Mbps consistently I'd be happy. But this is what I get:

Pathetic. I have been trying to get an answer for 2 months now

8ta service reps are ignoring this problem and putting it down to poor service coverage.

To cancel you have to pay R800 + The remaining subscription payments, which is completely pointless and a rip-off.

It sounds like they have no clue what they are doing and are doing their utmost to screw the customer over. You may as well kiss your contract good by and suffer with slow speeds for duration of the contract

Not sure when you signed up but possibly the new CPA was in force and that would support your cancellation requirements as they are not meeting their contract with you. That would mean you could cancel your contract a lot easier. I am not a legal guru but I am sure you could do this legally and they would have to pay costs if you win!May be a pain but cheaper than 800+ contract balance! You may then pay the cancellation fee and 1 month!

They are a bunch of rotten LIARS whom i hope get sued for all they are worth. On this very forum is a post by the 8ta rep confirming what was on their website, that it was only R800 cancellation fee and NO clawback and now they go back on the original agreement and no comment from the 8ta rep.

He or She is just a guy doing their job, probably without much mandate, it's nothing personal (in fact my sympathies to the guy or gal as it is a probably a very thankless job), my grief is with 8ta themselves not being more proactive and not honouring their agreements.

Still going strong here!

Tips for 8ta bliss

1.) E-mail and phone a freakin' lot. Be very very very persistant.

2.) Get a technician to visit you at home/office (whereever you use 8ta to connect to the web) - give the techie a cup of coffee, they are really friendly and surprisingly clued up on what to do.

3.) Mention Skype and International websites a lot - 8ta frowns a bit on torrents and heavy downloads, the bosses are prudes...

4.) Make sure you pay them every month - this keeps your side clean and gives you some leverage when complaining.

5.) Move the dongle around a bit. When the techie pitched at my place he moved the dongle (on a USB cable) about 50cm on my desk and the speed returned in force. Stupid, I know, but hey...

6.) There was some network issues and 8ta is working on it. Many things in this country take longer to get right than it took to get it built, 8ta & the Gautrain are perfect examples.

Oh, I forgot.

Speedtest.net results for International Servers suck, yet I get 500kbps+ download speeds on torrents.

Remember to check your local servers (best is if you're in Pretoria test to Cape Town etc.).

Thanks for the advice!

I logged a support case with 8ta (case# 538946) and hoping that they can get my speeds back up to before the slow down. I have an aerial which gives my 95%+ signal; so moving modem around won't help. I am in Randburg.

Can you tell me what they actually did on your side or did they work on the tower to fix your problem?

Hoping they will sort me out so I can resume my position as 8ta ambassador :)

To be fair, I don't think that a courtesy response or ticket reference requires much mandate.

That said, I received a PM at 08h13 this am, a call at 08h15 and had an engineer at my house by 11h30. He was very pleasant, identified the issue and mentioned that the fault was a high priority and that he had to report back directly to 8ta management (sometimes whining on forums and twitter does help).

I am now waiting to see if things will improve.

Great to see they are working on it. Did the technician give you the impression it is a tower problem - what could the fault be and is it restricted to certain areas?

It looks like a coverage/tower issue at my house. Reception is marginal...

Happy to help!

I do not know what exactly they did at the tower, but whatever they did got things back on track.
It seems that the problem is being fixed on a faultfinding basis (ie. if someone complains they fix the tower/exchange problems). Not the best way but certainly the most logical way.

I was surprised at the friendlyness of the technicians and their 'clued-up-ness' regarding the system & network.
Showing them the results of Speedtest.net, Pingtest.net and tracert prove you're not a whiner and also make it easier for them to check for problems on their side.

Just a word of warning - get the Midnight Surfer option (and another HDD), it's an extra 100 for another 10Gb (used after midnight). You will need it when the speed issue is sorted in your area - mildly active torrents download at 600kbps! You can download a high quality movie in the time it takes to eat dinner!
