8ta speeds suck! Report here... [solved!]

For s#1ts and giggles decided to test using different modem - the E3765 from Vodacom.

[Yes, the test took place after 11pm but I have run tests on the 8ta modem too]

*** I will test the 8ta SIM in the E3765 during the dreaded 6-11pm tomorrow to get a better idea of the situation. ***
I've also sent an e-mail to 8ta and will be spamming them with that mail until I get results.
It seems that 8ta branded software and hardware are not as compatible as expected and this might be a possible issue. SHiBBY, for example, is using a 42Mbps modem in Waverley and enjoys 9Mbps Speedtest results.
There are users like hugo69er that use the E173 and get speeds of 5Mbps.

However it may be, I've used my E173 and at best saw 40kbps downloads via torrents, using the E3765 I got results of over 350kbps (though not constant - avg was about 60kbps).

8ta's service suck - they need to improve dramatically to regain my trust.

Give me this at 17h30 on a Tuesday afternoon or Saturday morning (and reliably and constantly) and I'll port to 8ta.

when i update BF3 via origin it downloads from about 650kb-750kbs using the e173 modem. I have downloaded a torrent on my galaxy i9000 and got about 550kbs.

Well, my speeds prior to awesomeness was tested on a E220 with Vodafone dash, and since I'm using the Mobile Partner dash, it has been awesome. Don't know if that could also be a contributing factor. My location remains constant, tested from my study at home. Modem lies in the exact same spot where I got 800ms pings a week ago.

Been contacted by 8ta! Whoop!

Case number: 158063

We'll see what happens, but must say, I am very unhappy that the 8ta rep doesn't post here (maybe I missed it...)...

**********************

On a side note, have been enjoying my 8ta connection at work (the irony being that I got my 8ta contract to keep my torrents and surfing at home and do work stuff, you know at work!).

The joke?
My office is comfortably outside 8ta's coverage! Rofl!

These are consistent speeds for the whole day:

You're right, rodga. {blame lack of coffee for that mistake...}

Anyway, going home now and looking at some awesome thunderclouds (gotta love Afrikaansisms!) building up outside.

Just to set your minds at ease, when using my E220 again. Same location, same PC, same browser, EVERYthing...

Sh*tty ping and average speeds... But when using the E372, I get the previously posted results...

No doubt that a shaping policy is in effect at some of 8ta's towers.

I managed downloads Friday night and Saturday morning, via torrents, that hit 450kbps (total speed spread over 8 torrents). The speed did drop dramatically at about 10 on Saturday morning and avg. about 15kbps per download at peak.

I did manage to download about 47% of my cap thanks to the high speeds on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Over Sunday the speeds were very inconsistent and the connection did reset a few times.

Normal browsing is lightning fast though.

Please post which payment plan you're on, I heard the GO BIG plans are only using the telkom (8ta) backbone, and thus much slower, whereas the other pre-paid and contract bundles use the MTN backbone too.
Did I heard smack-talk, or is this still the case?

On the 10Gb promo (no midnight surfer).

Curiously, my speeds dropped and became unstable after my first debit order went through! :wtf:

Sunninghill

Yeah my speeds are still horrible and I am going forward with steps to get out of my contract. 2 months with 8ta and a sum total of about 2 weeks of usable internet speeds. Very disappointed. I have a case number and have waited almost a week for the network department to call me!

In the very beggining when this 10 gig promo 1st came out, I reached 120kbs download on a single file from rapidshare or any other file hosting site. Now 2-3 months later I only reach a max of 30-40kbs on a single file download. Same pc, same area, same location same everything. And to add to this, I am now getting quite a lot of modem dropouts where I have to reconnect. Thus making the download a failure.

Hi
The Internet 5 Promo and 2GIG + 1GIG Promo only use the 8ta network.

Thank you

Just got a call from 8ta (okay, a lady working there!).

They want to send a technician to my house to check the signal and connection.
Problem is I only get home at 17:30 - "No problem" she said and have arranged a techie to see me at 17:30 tomorrow!

Wow! Friendly and professional service from 8ta. :)
