8ta speeds suck! Report here... [solved!]

I have had my 8ta contract for about 4 months now and at the beginning, my speeds weren't that bad. When I play BF3 online, I constantly get disconnected. I have complained 5 times at 8ta in about a week and eventually got someone to investigate. He first took my SIM and used it on his laptop and got a download speed of over 2mbps (you need less than 2mbps to qualify for the 3G Booster). I told him that he should test my connection from my PC and then I got 1.65mbps download and 0.30 upload speeds with 106ping. After being a bit relieved that I now qualify for the 3G Booster, he tested the speeds again with the Booster connected and to my astonishment got 4.01 download, 1.80 upload and 84ping. This was short-lived as the connection would still vary every 5mins. My connection would be dropped and no issues were solved although I now have the 3G Booster.

Is there any way I could increase my connection speed and strength? I have a Huawei E173 connected to the 3G Booster (don't know the make or model). I live in PTA-East area in Garsfontein close to the High-school.

Thanks

Hang on, hang on, don't just zoom past that... When you say "qualify fot the 3G booster", would that be for the price of... um... FREE?!

New question: How do I slow down my connection?! :D

After hearing from Telkom that they can't povide me wth ADSL due to infrastructure issues, I decided to try 8ta's 3G.

I first checked their website to see if I have coverage, and saw that I was right in a circle with no coverage. But the 8ta promo's at the moment did seem to be the cheapest option. So I decided to try anyways.

I bought a sim at Pep and had it provisioned by calling their data customer care line. I had to lie to the support desk about my address because they double-check to see if you have coverage before provisioning your SIM (its also only after this that you can buy the 2gig + 1gig promotion). Then I stuck it into my CellC modem.

Luckily the test was VERY successful. I get amazing speeds on 8ta in a 'no coverage' area! Better speeds than the CellC and Vodacom 3G I had!

I must admit that I am very impressed with 8ta's 3g.

Ps. I live in Bloemfontein.

Unlucky chops... :D

What is a "3G Booster" ? Or do they come and install an antenna at your house?

@Dreamer
I agree with you 100%
Sent two e-mails to [email protected] and I'm still waiting for a reply, anyway my sim card was fixed at the Telkom Shop in Zevenwaght

Anyone else in the Honeydew area finding that 8ta is failing the pigeon test. I usually average around 3 Mbps but this has really deteriorated over the past couple of weeks. Tonight is the worst it's ever been:

I've tested different devices etc, same result. I am on the outskirts of the coverage area but have never experienced such miserable speeds before

I am in Honeydew Manor, 8ta semi died at about 4.00pm never recovered until this morning,
back to normal for me at about 5mps upload and 1.5 down.

Hi SHiBBY

Yes, you do get the 3G Booster for the period which you still have your contract at 8ta and if your download speed falls under the 2Mbps mark, after that, I guess they take it back. As for your new question, I have no idea haha.

Hi Carnajo

a 3G Booster is like an ariel yes. I have seen BIG ones on the net which you can mount to your roof but the one 8ta gives is ALOT smaller. It has about 2 meter cable and an ariel with a magnet. The ariel itself is about 30-40cm. The techincian told me that he gave alot of these 3G Boosters to clients and only 2 or 3 actually worked. Oh, and its about R800 for this 3G Booster if bought at a shop.

Hopefully 8ta signs the agreement with ATC.

and once again 8ta sucks, how are we meant to cope with the unreliable service. one day i will have great sppeds and pings. then for a week this crap.

Test conducted on 31 January 2012 09:27:42 PM

Download Speed: 416 kbps (52 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 40 kbps (5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 989 ms

Sooo....this crap has started again:

I remember that week we had country wide of constantly bad speed and ping between 6pm and midnight every day. This better not be a repeat of that. Sort it out 8ta, you already know what the problem is....

According to Ms. Dorny and Karl Muller, this will also burn all the trees in your neighbourhood, make all kids sick, sterilise you and kill your pets! :p

Annoyed, really.

Meh, 8ta rep please.

The past week or so I have been stuck with sub-par speeds.

Ok, so this is what I got just now: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1744286372.png

I'm using one of them entry level Huawei usb modems. I think it's max dl speed is 3.6Mbps.
I'm guessing this is pretty decent, yes?

I haven't read the whole thread but as a suggestion maybe try using a 'slower' modem - I found that when I temporarily used one of those uber fast 3G modems (21Mbps ?) my connection dropped pretty regularly. Very annoying. On this 3.6Mbps modem I find the connection to be very stable AND fast enough (for me).

I prefer to have a stable 'slow' connection vs. a super fast unstable connection.

@MartyMarts....post your international speed. I'm getting a very good signal here in fact full scale but the flippen speed drives me mad.
Any other prepaid deals that can match the 8ta 2+1 Promo (R149) ?

Yeah that was local. Here's an international test (to NY): http://www.speedtest.net/result/1744357481.png
Hmmm... looks like dial-up speed now.

However this is from a client's office in Kempton Park.

What I can't understand is that I'm getting a full scale signal but yet my speeds are terrible.
