8ta under fire for debit order change

That's the problem!

wooooh those thieves at standard bank must have cashed in on a few million with all these failed debit orders....

That's precisely my thoughts. I'm not too concerned about a debit order being pulled too early, the problem is the penalty for overdraft should your bank account not be authorized to handle an overdraft facility.

I don't think 8ta should be blamed as much as the banks here.

First of all their debit order facility lacks relevant security and implementation. There are tons of fraudsters getting things on contract by fooling companies into creating debit orders on other people's bank accounts. The banks must be taken to task, and given that we have a Consumer Protection Act that has been seemingly implemented to take a bite of the little guy's pocket, and not large corporations. Banks must be confronted and put in their place. The bastards make tons of money that could be constituted as theft, or at least unethical. But since the banks control our economy, and almost everything else financially, we are but caught by the balls.

Services provided by banks on the other hand, absolutely pathetic. All that cash flow, money, and the years they've been given in this country - and still they fall short on technology and proper implementation.

People like to use excuses in this country, "Ya you know what we don't have the demand for such services etc etc and solutions like this are not profitable, we have too small a population to implement first-world systems blah blah". Bull! The banks have at least 40 million customers divided among them - step up and take responsibility!

Bafoons, Lucky I had money in my account but I was a little baffled when the amount I expected to be in there was not. Also never received any notification SMS.

Telkom/8ta do it again!

no one mentions the intrest they earn by debiting early?

I doubt that it will amount to anything really.

This is just incompetence. Most probably it is one or more people that wanted to go on leave early so they decided to move the dates. I am pretty sure the admin mess it caused for 8ta is bigger than any advantage they got from it. Failed debit orders cost them money as well.

A lot of people don't have extra cash in the debit order accounts for unplanned/unscheduled debit orders. This is not just because they are poor - but they might want to put their cash were it can actually work for them, instead of letting it idle in a cheque account. Or their salaries get paid into a different account and they move the money via scheduled payment. Or a stay-at-home mom whose husband transfers money for debit orders at a specific time of the month. There is probably a million other scenarios.

Somebody needs some serious discipline.

Bounced debit orders are R3.50 at Capitec. SA people are sheep... BAAAAAAH!!!!

I once worked for a large JSE listed company and they often made sure that they get the money owed to them earlier when an accounting period closes and hold off on paying their bills at that stage - it created quite an improved financial report, but is obviously underhand, as Telkom probably is

Their accounting period ends on 31 March, not 31 December.

And 8ta are on a separate billing system to the Telkom billing system.

Ok, can't imagine that they do it for cash flow reasons, or maybe they do...

I never got an SMS & noticed the debit order went off early. Didn't really bother me but now coming to think of the extra money 8ta made in interest pisses me off that they didn't have the courtesy to make contact..

Its not only that for 3 months you can not apply for any credit cause you have a unpaid item on bank your statement.....

Cheque accounts with the major banks charge R50 -R152 per failed debit order...

On another note what is quite disturbing is that 8ta assumed that cause some people get paid early in december that ALL customers now need to be debited early..... So if you didn't get paid early you now suddenly have to face a change in your budget mid month not to mention christmas shopping too.

Virgin Compensation

I had exactly the same problem with Virgin in Dec 2010. They did send me a sms and I phoned them up and said not to do it as there would be no moneyin the account it came from until the 30th Dec. They agreed not to do it and then went ahead and took it taking no notice of the phone call.
I was furious because of the agreement I had had with then and the resulting consequences.
I called their call centres and was answered by the normal load of morons. I then then spent some time tracing the CEO down and after a couple of phone calls to his office I was paid compensation which covered a few months charges on two phones for the inconvience.

Don't be a typical South African and take it laying down. In the UK people fight

They didn't try this year

Don't see the problem if they notify people. Nedbank & a few other big companies do it.

They notified the people 5 days in advance. What can you do in 5 days. Some people didn't get paid earlier, which meant that they had to pay their subscription twice with 1 pay (end Novembers pay). Which means, less money for the holidays etc.
I'm with Vodacom and not a big fan of theirs, but they got some points for not deducting earlier.

Surely this is a breach of contract, the debit order date is agreed and signed on in the legal documentation. This is definitely one for the consumer protection council! A debit order should never be allowed to be brought forward, only delayed! My guess is 8ta doesn't have enough cash flow to carry themselves! No money in the coffers, and they can't pay creditors and staff! Imagine the disaster!

If you guys want to go with a network that has multiple NGO'S and African support programs they are sponsoring, go with MTN. There prices are much more expensive than the rest but they do their part. And in all my research I have not come across 1 seemingly shady deal, O.K there was that deal in Mozambique a while back that seemed a bit dark but I was mistaken after correlating many independent studies. No I do not work for MTN but I do have my network built around their infrastructure and it has not let me down,.....yet.....
You serious?

MTN was billing people incorrectly for a whole while around 2010 and causing much grief and stress. MTN is just as useless as the rest.
