Ja, well, just like guns, never jumped up and killed any one who happened to be in the vicinity, neither will SIM cards, but if some idiot picks either up, they are both capable of being used to do serious bodily harm leading to death ... , the common denominator is the "idiot" ... , not the objects ... :)

  • RICA is a legal requirement from Government and all customers with cellphone numbers on cellular networks in SA must comply with the law.

A semi daily conversation I get for being a mod
on a SA hacker site.

"Help - I forgot my mXit PIN! Can you hack it for me?"
"Then go to the lost PIN page."
"But my phone got stolen with my SIM inside!"
"Then go to the shop and buy a new SIM."
"But I won't get my same number!!!"
"RICA?"
"..."
*User has disconnected*

RICA has personally made my life easier :)

Thanks, 8ta, but I think OP's question is not why we must RICA, but rather why do we bother to RICA, when the people responsible for capturing the data don't bother to ensure details like names and ID numbers are correct.

I must rather agree with you here, as I know several people with falsely RICA'd SIMs. In theory it's a great idea - In a corrupt country... Not so much

I am sure that oak who has his ID number on my simcard is smilly all the way cuz he doesnt knw it
 
Well I have a Vodacom SIM that is RICA'ed to a foreigner that came to visit SA for 2 months last year.

If I was the criminal type I could use it for dodgy activities, easy. So If me, a legal binding citizen can get my hands on one of these how easy is it for the black market to flourish with them?

Shows you how great a controle RICA really is.
 
I think the main objective of such law is to make everybody get accustomed to disobeying the law. This is convenient for political purpose (and was observed in the past), as everybody who do this, becomes a part of corrupt immoral system.

I needed a MTN SIM for testing, as I stopped at the post office, I noticed a MTN street vendor trolley. While I went to check the post boxes for mail, the black gentleman who works with me, bought and RICA'ed a SIM card for me. If i am not mistaken I still have it, and it is still active.

When you transfered power to the new people, you didn't transfer your value system. What do you expect from these people?

Seriously, in the time it took me to collect mail from 4x P.O.Boxes, he obtained a MTN SIM, which I still have, and it is still active. That was about 3 months ago ... , talking of which, I must put a few rands worth of airtime on it, MTN are rather hasty, in recycling their numbers ...

This I completely disagree. People are changing. growing up. Quality people are everywere...
Problem is, they didn't learn from us good things, now we tend to learn wrongdoings from them.

Don't just load airtime, MTN will happily deactivate your SIM and steal your airtime.
You need to generate a billable event; make a quick call or send an SMS.
