g'day mybb. My son is turning 3 in November. i am thinking of getting him a dog. Which breed would you suggest for kids. the erf is 1300 m2 so space is not a prob.

i had to put down my dachshund two weeks ago due to old age. lovely dogs, but i want to have something else

Border collie :D

We have two collie mix breeds :o but they are the gentlest animals ever! I love them
They do tend to be a little edgy and nervous and I hear the breed does bite... But not hard...

WTF. The kid is 3 years old. Boerbull is temperamental, not well tempered, ie, it depends on the breed mixing what you will get. Border collie is a better choice, however they have a tendancy to herd kids, this includes biting. they are sheep dogs, not kid dogs, plus are very active, and if they become bored, they will act out. and then lastly, a rottweiler. perhaps there is a lot of BS about them, but a 3yr old lighty against an 80 kg dog...enuf said. I have 3 staffies, which are fantastic with my 2 young girls. plus they are excellent companions and watchfull over your kids.

Your statements about the staffies can be repeated about the rotties.
And your statements about the rotties can be repeated for staffies.
It's all about the training.

My friend has 2 beautiful american long legged pit bulls.
Everything I know about pits are to be very careful.
These 2 are awesome family dogs.
However if you take them outside the yard they maul all other animals.

That is terrible behavior.

I agree on the herding and nipping of the border collies. Got me 2 german sheppard pups a month ago, I do not have a garden left. Get a Jack russel. Enough energy equal to a 3 YO, would play lots together.

Rottweiler.

Don't believe all the BS about them, they are lovely dogs.

We had 3 while we were kids. They were very loving and protective. My friend when we were like 7 or 8 hit me when we were having a fight and Ceasar gave him a little nibble on the bum (did not draw blood .... only left a little bruise) and chased him out of our yard. The parents of my friend freaked out and wanted the dog put down ... but somehow our parents resolved it.

What??? Where do you come on this??? Never have I experienced anything bad from my Boerbuls when I was younger. And if you google this topic you will find that it is a very well tempered dog.

Staffies on the other hand...yeah it depends on how you raise your dogs, I had 3 pit bulls as well and they never snapped or bit any other dog.

Perhaps, but yet again, 20kg's vs 80 - 100kg's lying on a 3yr old....

If you can wait until next year, you can buy one of my puppies. They are Chinese Crested dogs, and absolutely GREAT with kids! They are very playful, hypoallergic, doesn't shed any hair and they are flea resistant. I have never ever had one single flea on my dogs. They are the best companions for a kid, they are loyal and very very gentle.

Jack Russel is good but they do sometimes bite. Especially when the 3 YO starts to get a little rough with the dog. I have a Jack Russel but he isn't that good with kids. He tends to get too hyper around them and that freaks the little guys out.

My folks got me a staffie when I was about 4 or so and we were the best of friends. Staffies may seem big and mean but they love humans and are very careful with children. They are so good with kids that they are even referred to as "Nanny dogs".

Oh, Chinese Cresteds also hardly bark, they are super calm dogs, and like a real life pony :)
