A dog for my son

so, according to PetMD.com these are the best breeds for kids

#10 The Bull Dog

#3 The Poodle
#2 Labrador Retriever

Crazy recommending a boerbul. I have had a few boerbuls in the family and all were lovely and never bit anybody. But compared to most breeds they have a more unpredictable nature. My mom was attacked by her friend's boerbul after she had known the dog for probably 5 years. She was feeding the dog while the friend was on holiday and the dog just bit her out of the blue.

The doctor who treated my mom said that in his 15 years as a doc he has treated far more victims of boerbul bites than most 'aggressive breeds' and that considering how few boerbuls there are around compared to other breeds they are very high risk and unpredictable.

My vote would be for a jack russell, maltese or lab/retriever.
 
Bassets are an awesome choice for kids, Brilliant family dogs, wouldn't really consider it though if you want it as a guard dog. My bassets LOVE kids, We had friends come over with their 2 month old baby and he went and lay down with his head on the baby's chest, it was soooo cute, he is just so gentle when it comes to kids and small puppies, its like they have a sense that tells them this is a baby, take it easy.

They are very clever dogs, just extremely stubborn so training does take a bit longer than other dogs but they are just the cutest. Just if you do have kids and they want to play with him, dont let them sit on his back or put too much strain on the bassets back, they do get back problem when they older if they are not taken care of..

I also love my huskies, and staffies, and pitbulls and bulldogs but cant see me living without a basset in my house.

He went for training purely because I got him when he was 12, and had been abused and was more than a handful.. but its about being firm and the aura of being man of the house... my boy knows when he's in trouble and usually all it takes is a look for him to stop doing whatever he is doing.

Never a truer word was spoken, mine is a little child, and demands all the same things as a little child... and even though i didn't want him to sleep in the bed initially, I always woke up to find him with his head on my chest snoring away.... and you can't get angry with that at all.

I grew up with a Staffie - he was a great dog, albeit a bit dominating at times. When I was very little he would go out of his way just to push me over. But I think it would be different if the dog grows up with the kid

We now have a Pit bull. She is a brilliant dog and very protective over children, but nasty to other dogs, so maybe not the best choice.

I also have a Beagle. They are extremely friendly and I think they are a great choice for kids. They are very naughty, and will eat EVERYTHING, but personality and temperament-wise you can't get better.

And people, there is no such thing as a Maltese Poodle.

Urgh... Maltese... Sandton sheep.

I'm a die-hard pitbull fan. Most fantastic dogs ever IMO and I recon if you get a puppy and they grow up with the kid they'll be pals for life. That said, if you have reservations, a Retriever or Labbie is probably the way to go.
 
I think I would go with a border collie or poodle.
As puppies they will grow up with the kid, both are extremely intelligent, easy to train and well behaved.
 
If you do go for a border collie just be aware that they need A LOT of exercise. Walks every day and a big property. They get frustrated otherwise and start chewing things and toys will be crunched.

We give our dogs lots of toys to chew and they go to the park everyday so we don't have problems.
They do sometimes steal toilet paper though.
 
We've always had one or two German Shepherd/Alsatians (or GSH cross breeds) in the house... from when I was a kid until I moved out and even now with my own kids around. I was fortunate that we got the first 'bitch' as a puppy around the time my daughter was born and then bought another puppy a few years later when my son was born. They grew up with the dogs and the dogs were very protective of them. They also double as great guard dogs!

Alternatively a Labrador or Retriever...
