Do you train your dogs?
I don't believe any dog is inherently aggressive or dangerous.
I wouldn't go pickup a rescue and slap him in front of my 3 year old.
There are steps you take to ensure the success of your dog.

That is the core principal of most dog training, line your dog up for success.
 
It all comes down to how the child treats the dog, if they both respect each other then its all good but if the child doesn't stop irritating the crap out of it then it will be a problem.

My list will be:

-Miniature Jack Russell (Great lap dog and if you don't mind it sleeping in your bed)
-German Shepherd
-Corgi
 
Best dog I ever had was a black spaniel. Very protective and almost never dangerous. They also make great alarm dogs.
 
I would highly recommend a beagle, awesome dogs. They are ridiculously friendly.

I agree with you. I trained my dogs myself. A puppy from the SPCA is more advisable than a grown dog so the kid and dog can grow and establish a relationship together.

I'd hate to see a situation where even a well trained dog is somehow triggered into being violent by a seemingly small incident with my kid, all because it's history (past ownership) was not very clearly known at adoption. I personally wouldn't be able to fully trust such a dog around my kid if I'm not around.

As for bull terriers - there's no way I'd ever let one into my house, never mind close to kids. One of my friends have two (siblings), and those two are forever fighting for dominance. My concern with a bull terrier and a small child will be - what if it decides to challenge the child's authority in the pack? Especially if you're a first-time dog owner, rather stick to a breed that allows more mistakes in training it on your part.

Does not compute.... Yes Jack Russels loves to sleep in the bed with you, but that doesn't make them a lap dog. They are way too energetic to be a lap dog

Well mine is glued to my mom's lap and for the energetic part, I think someone is feeding yours sugar or something.

Yes mine does chase me or the ball down the passage, or run around when she had a bath but I wouldn't call that energetic at all.
 
Bullterrier.

A colleague of mine has a bitch and that thing is sturdy and strong yet compact enough so you can take it places.

I'm going to by myself a bullterrier when I buy a house some day.

I was bitten by one while still in school, later bit another kid and was then put down. My uncle had two many many years ago and they killed the postman. Other dogs I've been bitten by was Doberman (twice) and alsatian/gs.
 
What about a cavalier king charles spaniel? They are also cute as hell! I still say wait until I get my puppies :D
