My vote goes for a Labbie but bear in mind a boisterous year old pup weighs around 25kgs and loves throwing its weight around - might be a bit much for a 3 turning 4 year old child

They must have been raised wrong.. or the postman did something to the two your uncle had that made them snap.

I've watch one of mine clear a 6 foot fence in one jump to run after someone who had threatened my dad... we only caught up to the dog after a good few kms... and the guy was still running... really don't know how he outran the dog.
 
Why not another daschund? They are wonderful dogs. Try not to go for a pedigree but one with a bit of "brak" in the dog. Prevents spinal disorders later in life. Our one is 14 and still thinks she is 4 (and also top dog in the street)

They require a strong "master" in the house, but they are absolutely brilliant with kids. Mine even lets random kids ride him like a horse at the local farmers market and doesn't even bat an eyelid....

Nah dude I love dogs and they love me. The one doberman incident was entirely my fault, I teased it and it snapped biting me in the face, was proably 3 or 4yrs old. Second doberman I was pushing this this other kid on his bicycle and his doberman decided to sink his teeth into my ass, a year or so later :D The alsatian/gm was always a aggressive dog to people outside of the family (they had 8 of them I think separated into two packs on the farm) from what I recall it was abused before they adopted it. I slowly tried to win it's trust and eventually it tolerated me (instead of madly barking and snapping), one day I opened the door to go into the house (after greeting and stroking all the dogs) and as i walked in she sorta lunged and snapped at me, fortunately the teeth just grazed my leg as I saw her coming and sped up :D

We had a bull terrier whe i was small,but dont remember much about her. Also had a staffygrowing up for 13 years. most amazing dogs ever. remember dressing the dog up with my sister. even ride it like a horse. all when we were young. he didnt do anything except give that BIIIIG staffy smile I remember to this day. Still miss him and its been longer than a decade since hes gone. sraffies in my experience are amazing with children.

My mom now has two rhodesian ridgebacks. amazing dogs. probably my favourite big dogs.extremely loving.

another option that isnt always considered is a spca dog. my neighbour got one, and it was so happy that she took it in that it was the most loving and protective dog ive ever seen. it took a while to warm up to me but when it did it had a very cool personality.
 
I stay away from bull terriers.

The two I have had contact with were both psycho. One was in durban, the other in cape town.
Both spent inordinate amounts of time stalking things in the garden.
Both attacked kids, neither wanted to let go once they had a grip.

and of course - they are butt ugly
 
Some strange suggestions, most dogs are awesome, but your best option would be a Labrador, amazing and gentle breed for a 3 year old. The retriever same but requires more grooming and it will shed long hairs.

Second choice, definitely a rottweiler. I generally always have one of each, the rottweiler helps teach the lab how to be a guard dog, but both breeds awesome with kids.

Definitely no to Beagle. My Beagle is my favorite dog, but he needs a lot of attention and work and not suitable as an only dog.
 
oh yes. dont get a sheepdog if youre in a town/city. theyre amazing dogs,but my mother always said its sad if theyre in town because you always see them running up and down a fence. they get frustrated (need their space.like a farm) and act out, like others here said.
