A dog for my son

My personal list of dogs:

I grew up with a Great Dane
Had 3 Maltese
1 Staffy
2 Labradors
1 Skipperky cross
1 Pit Bull
1 Jack Russel
1 Beagle

The Great Dane was my best buddy as a boy, they are wonderful dogs with great character, but possibly a bit big for a 3 year old, but they are gentle lazy dogs.
The Staffy would be my No 1 recommendation, the are great nanny dog, mine was a bit boisterous but great.
Labradors would also be high on my list, they are very gentle, but they tend to bark a lot.
The Pit Bull is a great dog, but I would not recommend one in this case, you need to spend a lot of time with the puppy to socialize them properly.
The Beagle is great, also a bit of a barker and needs puppy training
I would not recommend the Jack for such a small child, but for an energetic youngster (from about 7 & up) they are brilliant companions.

My Great Dane was not a gentle lazy dog.
He was very energetic and bashed everyone over.
Awesome dog but as mentioned I get nervous with their age now.
Having lost my boy to a heart attack at 4 expecting him to reach 10 after doing everything possible to help him develop correctly.
 
Great Danes are great with kids of all ages.

I have a basset, not easy to house train. even though she is still a puppy (13 months), their is the occasional accident.

oh and remember, with bassets, they like to hunt...and dig holes. holes in carpets as well. you have to keep them plenty entertained.
 
Great Dane size alone scares people.
They are great with kids but can also get over excited and bite.
My Dane bit my friend on the head.
He wasn't trying to hurt him but thought he was one of the boys and got excited because the kid was playing/teasing him.
My Dane just swallowed the kids head and the kid panicked and jumped back bumping his head on the dogs teeth.

Can't blame the dog for that but his size alone was enough to hurt the kid.

That doesnt sound like normal behaviour to me. Our pup gets excited my wife and I are playing rough with her and the only time she's 'hurt' a kid is with her swinging tail, but biting? Never.

When strangers come around she'll put herself between them and the kids and gently nudge the kids out of the way.
 
Like I mentioned, you can't call it biting.
He used to mouth our arms to pull us where he wants us.
It's the same thing he did to this kid.
The kid got excited and actually bumped himself on the dog's open mouth if you get my drift.

He never hurt a fly.
 
I got a German Shepard for my son, he's 3 in November. The two of them are inseparable, they play ball take each other for walks (mostly the dog takes my son!) lessons are key and we've been doing lessons since she was 8 weeks old. We got her while we were still in our flat and knew we were moving so house training was tough but she soon learn't what outside was.

Now that we have a garden she roams around and its definitely a warning to anyone wanting to stop in for an unscheduled visit. I grew up with a Border Collie, but they needed more exercise from what I read and the German Shepard was my next choice.

Yes she has munched the couch a little here and there, but if you have a 3 year old you'll be used to the crumbs, sticky walls and all the wonderful things that come with kids! After all she is still a kid herself! The second photo always reminds me of the truth about pets...

Then I guess I'm a retard too. I can't stand the little bastards. Fukken arrogant little white matkakkertjies. I would rather stab my eyes out with pencils than let a poodle into my house.

Ironically, we had a Great Dane who seemed to share my opinion. He couldn't stand poodles. Was fine around any other dogs, but poodles was the bane of his existence. He would go nuts if a poodle started barking at him. He got into a scuffle with one once while we were walking on the beach and this little white rat came yapping at his heels. He turned around, stepped on the brat and gave him a good nip. That was the end of that. Matkakkertjie ran away, tail between his legs howling pathetically.
