Hey ;)

I bought an MTN simcard and loaded some airtime.

I loaded R30 today, opened Gmail and browsed about 10 attachments for my mom, I didn't even open the pics, I only showed her the thumbnails,

I opened 1 other forum page and about 3 pages here, then I checked the airtime, it was a whopping R15 used

Is there any way to convert say R30 airtime to a mini data bundle to pay a reduced rate per mb? Or not?

Is the rate I'm paying at the moment R2.00?

Thanks ;)

There's a 10MB bundle for R10.

Thanks, wish I was a bit more inquisitive and asked before wasting R30 :(

I phoned MTN as well and the lady just said, "some websites charge more, others don't, but you pay a flatrate of R2.00 per mb.)

She probably meant some sites use more bandwidth or something, I still think it's ridiculous though, haven't even spend 3 minutes on the net and R10 is shweeps, gone :p

Ok, I loaded a 10mb data bundle. How do I know if it's expired (should be in 3 minutes), but why can I only have 1 and not for the whole R30? :p

You can only get 1 a month per sim card so you could always stagger your R30 over 3 months. :D Otherwise you can get 100MB @ R80 and so on.

Huh?

What if it's finished, can't I load another 10mb bundle?

Some genius at MTN decided you should only have one data bundle in a 30 day period.

To overcome this, some people resorted to "SIM farming" (buying a bunch of prepaid SIMs and rotating them). Since Vodacom launched their prepaid data bundles it's easier just to switch to them.

I've never heard such crap in my entire life. Who the hell on this planet earth is going to use 10MB in fricken 30 days? Holy Giraffe it takes me fricken 3 minutes to deplete it

I have to use MTN where I am because it's the only network with fair signal, Voda, CellC etc. have almost no coverage here.

Stuff this man! Really

There are still people using GPRS, so R10 can be stretched a bit. I agree with you about the money going fast - I compare it to Virgin and it seems to last longer there (bang for buck), but unfortunately, the experience is dismal.

I would remove the bang out of the equation when talking about Virgin, their Gprs service is way below par even with full signal, it's the most irritating experience of my life.

I just don't see how any corporation could expect someone to live with 10 megabytes for 30 days, even a donkey has better logic than that.

It's plainly stupid, no other words for it, and I'm on in the least ashamed to say it. I am glad that the sim card only cost me R2, but wasting near R60 today just to get a measly few pages open is not my idea of a fun ride, I could have used that R60 in a much better way, but now it's in the pockets of disgusting MTN Corporates  :p

10MB could be useful if you only browse from your phone I guess, otherwise its pretty dumb.

If you google SIM farmers on this site you will find a lot of people who feel the same way. The "solution" is to have multiple prepaid SIMs.:(

Have you got airtime for me to google? I'm afraid of using the last few cents I have ;) :D :p

And remember it becomes a dead sim if not used (outgoing call)in a space of 30 days so you have to juggle that one in your farm managment plan too.
