A reality check for Vista

Anyone got XGL installed? I have it on MEPIS 6.0, and it makes Vista look old... :)

One word - but a huge effect. I have been running games as tests on Linux, and yes, these games required DirectX. Yes, they run successfully.

I admit, they may not be the absolutely bloody latest, but they run. :p

How's that for positive? Oh, and I have a 3D desktop too. Cost: $0.

microsoft had so much money at one point the banks stop accepting it and they had to pay their shareholder out a kuk load of money

now a company that has that kinda of money can sell their OS for 600 to us im sure

they would sell more copies because guys like me wouldnt pirate it
600 is perfect anything more means pirate time

LOL so much for running games yeah. ALL the hartdware accelerated games there are OpenGL, which is open source so where again is the DirectX emulation. (As in Direct3D native game)...

Only because MS aren't interested in porting DirectX to *nix. You really can't blame Linux junkies for that - you can only blame the game developers for not supporting OpenGL or MS for not porting DirectX.

I use Linux for all my work and then dual boot to XP to play games.
The best of both worlds : High productivity in Linux without trojans and spyware and other crap and then some fun games in XP.
If my XP partition get's infected or something I just format and reinstall - it's not like I have anything important on it to lose.

Anyway games are over-rated time wasters for people who are too scared to socialize face-to-face and have fun with real people. :p

I find it quite amusing that Linux users always presume that Windows users [with 100% certainty] that they're going to get infected with spyware etc.

Yes I've been affected once but it wasn't really an issue for me. If you have a proper AV & firewall set-up and don't visit dodgy sites then for the vast majority of time, you'll be virus-free :).
 
MS are brilliant at marketing. That is why they are where they are. I don't know if Vista will be good or bad, or compare favourably with my kitchen sink. But I do know that I wouldn't know what to do with Linux if it hit me in the head. There are milions out there like me in this situation.

Vista ain't worth that much... if Microsoft gave us the OS it promised maybe but its not.

"An OS that RUNS your PC" Linux is free and can do the same... yes its not as easy as windows, but give it time... common its free!
 
Oh, obviously I wont be paying for it.. the internet people the internet, I still dont like M$ so im not going to buy their over priced product, but I am going to use it :D

Okay, obviously the Linux people have a different point, but I also know people who didnt use XP for a few years because they said 98se was perfect and that XP was just a way for M$ to make more money and had better protection from copying and that was all. DO you belive himn now with hindsight? It will be the exact same thing when you are still sitting with XP in a few years. New technologies will arrive like wireless did and you wont be able to use them or not nearly as easily.
 
Who cares what Linuix can do? Point is Windows does what you want it to do right now. That linux can run a 100% safe server, do X, Y , Z & protect me from invading aliens who have come with a virus from another dimension is besides the point. It doesn't play Fear and that's an immediate problem for me.

For my purposes and many other people's, Windows works fine.
That something is free does not make it good. In fact if you can afford something, it being free is a non issue. It may be free, but to do what exactly? Free to not do what I would gladly pay for an operating system to do? :/
Yeah linux shmynucks, each to his own. Enjoy the 10 games from 2001 available to you and let others be. ;)

I like XP but I like Vista even better
 
I have to agree with one thing in the article ... Vista is like say XP SP4 ... nothing revolutionary.

Been using RC1 since it was avaliable to dev partners, and from a user perspective the only 2 noticable things are the UI (Aero Glass) & the re-worked networking (innovative in that it tries to identify networks, but inaccurate in its detection).

I still can't believe people queued to buy Windows 95. That's like waiting in line for a fresh hot turd :)
 
The only things I can think of offhand that I want are the new handwriting recognition engine, the new display engine and the new audio subsystem. Unfortunately I have no doubt that underneath it will still be the bloated mess for which Microsoft was infamous. It'll get sick with time, the registry will get fat and the OS will go senile.

I'm not planning to buy Vista however.
 
No it's not a service pack. Drivers work differently. WDDM is totally different from what could be achieved with a Service Pack.
One fo the reasons why DX10 is not going to be on XP is because of the driver model and how programs interact with the hardware. It isnt a facve lift its an OS that's spent years in development. That it looks familiar and behaves in a way you recognize is a good thing, becuase then the tehcnology is not in your face.

Just looking at DX10 alone there lotsa pages you could wirte about what's different in the Operating Systems that makes the API possible.
The GUI is near perfect, what else must MS do to revolutionize the GUI.

You forget that we use it reluctantly.

I'd be willing to pay for a Microsoft OS if they released one that didn't feel like beta software.
