I'm with you there - a horrifying concept! Ever since MS suddenly woke up to the internet and rushed out IE, they have been trying to make their OS look like friggin web pages. WHY??
OS/2 was technically better. In fact it was great. But being better doesn't make a product successful. Good marketing makes a product successful. And Microsoft could have sold people a rusty sink and had them thinking they'd got a good deal.
Microsoft are the poster company for making money the mafia way.
I hope Vista is good, but I'm not counting on it. Time will tell if Microsoft has solved the same issues that have plagued every OS they've released since they created their devil spawned registry. And I won't install it until I know that any DRM nonsense is not going to cripple my hardware.

That's excatly what i was talking about above. It's very easy to get on the bandwagon and bash MS, but in truth 90% of those people have no clue what's cooking with Vista. MS didn't invest millions if not billions into an OS and API to relase a Service Pack.
Some people are just missing th epoint entirely and for that they blame Micorsoft.

Not sure what you are saying, and I have no clue what's cooking wif Vista, but I do know that I am allergic to DRM.
Do some reading on the innards of Vista, then ask that question. It will remain to be seen what the final version is like. Microsoft may relent on some of the more draconian intentions. As I said I reserve judgement until then.

I dont think the average user (buyer) really gives a toss about that. Their perspective is ... what new tangible/beneficial features/functions am I'm getting for my $$$.
So far I dont see too much ... smells, feels & tastes like XP. We'll have to see how much of a superior gaming experience DX10 actually delivers in the future too.

dont feed the devil download your copy of vista from down.cd for cheapest and best windows out there
What a lot of people seem to forget is that MS will force you to update to Vista sooner or later via one of the following methods :
1. Release DirectX 10 for Vista only so that new DX10 games will only run on Vista.
2. New PC's come with Vista pre-installed so people gradually move across as they retire their old ones.
3. Stop selling XP so new PCs are forced to use Vista.
4. Stop providing updates and fixes to XP (longer term weening).
It's not IF you're going to "upgrade to Vista - it's WHEN.

I dont know if they will try and force you.. have they ever done that with DX before? I know they stop supporting a operating system after a few years, but that is only once the OS is really dead.
And ofcourse they will ship new PC's with Vista, why wouldnt they, they want to sell their OS right?

Obviously it's going to look very similar to XP. WHat esle must be done to the user interface? XP GUI is near perfect, so in truth what else do you want to happen to the interface.
Why is a user interface kept fimiliar? Because every time you have to learn to use somethign new, you lose productivity. It's that simple, M$ knows this and anybody in development of Operating systems knows this. NO actually it's common sense.
Vista can't all of a sudden make icons pop out of your screen. Your LCD/CRT/Plasma is a 2D display device, there's nothing esle we can do about that and don't knock MS because the user interface looks familiar.
There won't be a DX10 for XP.
DX10 is vastly different from DX9 even DX9L is different from XP. Once again, this is because the way WindowsXP works right now is not optimal for the direction games need to take to advance. Besides game the entire graphics paradigm of XP/2000 is not ideal. This has immediate effect on what hardware we run today.
Quad SLI is slower than normal SLI 70%+ of the time.
Current graphics cards have been getting less and less returns on silicon space because fothe way WindowsXP/DX9 work. Double the silicon investestment is not giving us double the performance or anything close to that. (We see progress in design scaling, better pipelining, scheduling etc... but all these are brute force approaches)
Game development time is longer than it should be and visual quality is not scaling correctly with available technology.
All of these are because of DX9 and XP/2000.
Tim Sweeney, Richard Huddy, John Carmack, Jen Hsun Huang, Richard Orton and many others have sighted Vista as a necessary change in the way programs are handled and this will bring about a new way of looking at game design etc...
Flat memory space on graphics cards and unlimited memory rersources, memory read backs, reduced driver overheads, better hardware abstraction, better state change management, fewer state changes, native mulit gpu render, better load balancing, etc... These are all not possible with DX9 and XP. And this is just dealing with the graphic elemment of Vista alone.
Which ever way you look at it, Vista is a necessary upgrade at least if DirectX is to grow and get better.
All I'm just saying is the true innovation is under the skin of Vista and you cannot know about it unless you go out and find out about it.

I'm not bashing Vista... I just dont like the price that's all and why cant Microsoft just create one version of Vista
nobody wants the stripped down crap like home basic
most of us here will have Vista running within 2-3 years on our PC's anyway

ha ha ha... all games are 4 windows... thats where windows scores, people play games so they will go the route where they get the best option... m$ are extremly good marketer's so they could sell us xp that look's cool and we'll all buy it... and BTW vista is in a different league to any thing else coz it was ment to be realsed 2 years ago BUT they spent those 2 years making sure that there aint any bugs in it... of course there are some but thats just windows i mean i think they delayed vista just to put in a few 
. they've really been trying hard at vista now and thats the trueth... they've also kept it very quite so over os makers dont get any idea's... and look xp has had a good life so vista is welcome. Sure i don't like windows coz of those little bugs and just about every virus is wanting to F#@k up your system but if your a gamer . i've never tried using another os but m$ have made os's what they are today. but if it weren't for the other os's there wont be a vista coz there wont be competion to make m$ advance! well i don't wanna steal yo thunder so... i guess every one to there own so if you like me and 90% of windows user's you'll go with vista... if you wanna stray with xp sure it up to you and if you with another os its up to you... but just think why m$ has such a strong hold on the os market... well i give you a clue...
