A way to do disk cleanup or defrag on Mac?

I have never heard people ask about it, but is there a way like there is in windows? Or is the file allocation system much improved on mac and you generally do not need to?

U don't need to defrag.

If u want to check your disk then go to the "Disk utility", in the Applications folder, and run "verify" on your disk.
 
thank you. the thought came to me today as I use to do it now and again on my windows pc and never heard it mention on mac.
 
You do get a app called iDefrag, payware.
To re-org your HDD restart your mac holding down CMD+S
type in "fsck -fy"
when done type in "reboot"
done.
 
will it speed up performance?
And if so you promise I won't lose any data?

buy i pc and put xp on it and then you can defrag to your hearts content :D

Well according to this article it doesn't seem to be much point in defraging at all on a mac.

So naaaah...you can go on defraggin without me :p

How can anyone promise you wont loose data? You shouldn't but it's your responsibility to have an up to date backup - even if it's only a time machine drive.
 
no one can...but a person can tell you you definitely need to back up or no I am pretty sure it will be fine.

AFAIK fsck is doing a file system check, it does not do re-org or defragging of your data?

Not defraggin no, but there is a level of re-org going on + it fixes any incorrect reporting re free space.
 
fsck is a a file system check and repair, so no actual data is moved around. It can be slightly risky, especially when u assume yes to all questions since it will delete certain damaged inodes etc. its main functions include
fixing unreferenced inodes, repairing blocks listed as free space, links, unused blocks not listed (usually from a bad erase/delete) and incorrect info in the superblock.

It is actually run during normal boot but in a very limited form, and in -fy when in safe mode.

Yeah I use Drive Genius 2. It sucks to run off the Applications folder as you can't defrag boot drive, but if you burn a downloadable boot disk you can
do anything :).

Company actually mailed me an updated boot disk recently, as I purchase a downloadable version earlier in the year.

When you work with 50GB sized files, it helps to defrag :).
