A4 Burned clutch

40k and the clutch gone? An A4 clutch on diesels should last till 200k. Then the clutch is covered under motor plan! only rubber and glass not, take it back and demand a replacement. The clutch wouldn't make smoke (like visible) it will smell like steel that gets to hot.

The clutch usually give you notice that it's busy going, it will judder when pulling away, 40k just sound to short for me.

The motor plan is till 100k, so enough time to get it repaired then!
 
My car has 255000km on the clock and I'm still on the original clutch. I did snap the connecting rod off and was left without a clutch, which I still drove for 20km.

Fixed the rod and off I go.

But yeah most females do ride on the clutch and no speed bumps aren't a valid reason.

Riding a clutch is the position the clutch is at when only some of the power as going through the fly. When you go over a speed bump, rather disengage the gear completely rather than holding in the clutch half way...
 
I think so, as i am driving short distances with lot speed humps.

Approach speed bump, press the clutch all the way, slow down, shift to 2nd, go over bump and slowly release clutch.


How hard can it be.

You're going over a speed bump in neutral? Your driving tips are dangerous, you don't even know how to keep a 3 second following distance.

Nothing dangerous about it. Every time you change gears you're essentially in neutral while shifting to the next gear.
How do you propose it be done?
Stay in 4th gear and hit the bump at 80km/h?
Just now you're going to be telling people that it's dangerous to leave your car in neutral while stopped at a traffic light.

Dude. Whatever speed you're doing, brake without the clutch til get to the hump, clutch in, change to 2nd, then hit the hump...

Let's say you take an off ramp at 100km/h in 6th gear and there is a stop ahead at a traffic light.
You have to put the clutch in before stopping otherwise you're going to stall the engine.
The only other option is to gear down like a truck driver 6-5-4-3-2-1 to use the engine to help you brake but that is daft in a car.
Most people would leave it in 5th/6th gear with the clutch in and then when stopped select 1st.

Further proof of the uselessness of the current driving education system we have. Teaches you how to turn your head but nothing about driving a car or how it works.

Let us say you are going into a bump, gear locked to 2nd with clutch in. Someone rear-ends you and your foot falls off the clutch pedal, this leads to damage on the clutch and an unexpected acceleration which could lead to another accident. With the gear engaged, you have less variables for what could go wrong so instead of the car picking up speed it will simply keep that speed to a degree with less structural damage, as well as making crash control easier for you since you don't have to readjust your driving for the increased speed.

I'm on 317000km myself with original clutch. To be fair, the car has spent 80% driving on highways though.
 
I have a suspicion that OP doesn't understand what riding the clutch means and so is being taken for a ride by the stealership.

I had a clutch fail on a 2.0 TDI at about 50k KM and the stealership tried to blame me as well when I told them that I rev the car to 1.5k-2k RPM before releasing the clutch. They changed their tune when I asked them to show me how it's supposed to be done and they stalled a good few times in another TDI while trying to prove a non-existent point. The car idled at almost 1k RPM FFS.
 
The speed bump advice in this thread must be for the city. Here, in my town, we have about 3 or 4 different types of speed bumps that ranges from the 100km/h kind all the way down to 5 or 10 km/h.
 
Most of the time I usually slow down enough to change it to second before hitting the bump, and go over the bump with second engaged. I try go slow enough so I don't have to brake going over it.

That way I have instant power once I'm over :D

Edit: Interesting, I consulted wiki on riding the clutch. Two things stuck out:

Riding the clutch occurs when the driver does not fully release the clutch pedal. This results in the clutch disc slipping against the flywheel and some engine power not being transferred to the drive train and wheels. While inefficient, most drivers routinely use this technique effectively when driving in reverse (as fully engaging the reverse gear results in velocity too great for the short distance traveled) or in stop-and-go traffic (as it is easier to control the throttle and acceleration at very slow speeds).

And this on coasting out of gear, which I've always wondered myself:

While this is not damaging to the car, it can be considered a dangerous way to drive since one forgoes the ability to quickly accelerate if needed
