London - Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin says affirmative action is dead in many respects and is no longer applied in practice because there is such a skills shortage in South Africa.

In a question-and-answer session with members of the South African Business Club in London on Thursday, Erwin defended the country's affirmative-action policy, saying South Africa would have had a greater skills shortage if it had not been for affirmative action.

"The number of skills South Africa needs could not possibly have been provided by white South Africans only."

In reply to a question about how important the policy of affirmative action still was for the African National Congress government, Erwin said affirmative action "is dead in many respects, not as far as policy is concerned, but as a requirement (during job interviews)".

He mentioned medical appointments in the Western Cape as an example, saying most of the doctors appointed in that province were white.

Mods, can we have a poll as to whether affirmative action is effectively dead, or whether it is still being implemented.
 
AA is still being implemented, but I have seen exceptions made depending on the position. We recently had a right handed Afrikaner male promoted to senior management (and there were plenty of MBA qualified non-whites who applied). The guy has a good track record and has above average technical knowlege so he was probably the best choice.
 
Of course he is going to say that to a bunch of expats who might have thoughts of wanting to come home. He is clearly talking BS...go to Sunday Times jobs and see lots of 'AA' positions.

And about the medical thing...wasn't it reported a few weeks ago that there was a shortage of medical staff precisely because there were not enough black candidates?

Exactly how many white & indian doctors were not allowed to work at Groote Schuur cos theres a shortage of black doctors. And all those white & indian doctors went overseas.
 
Breaking News

The LochNess monster and Bigfoot were seen having tea in London. Alec Irwin commented that these 2 candidates were the best creatures to be the custodians of Myths and Legends. This is proof that AA is dead, otherwise previously disadvantaged non Myth and legend creatures could have applied for the post of Myth Custodian, but in this case, these 2 creatures are the best. There are many more less qualified candidates, the tooth fairy and Santa Claus also applied, but were turned down as Santa only works 1 day a year. the Tooth fairy on the other hand was a bit small and was at risk of flying in to a bug zapper and being killed.

AA is Good for the country?

AA is sometimes good ? but only when you want to play the AA card.

A few comments:

Our company gets less than 5% from contracts that benefit South Africa.

Almost all our contracts are either directly consulting for projects in other countries, our consulting for local companies with a similar profile as ours on foreign projects.

All local projects (execution in South Africa) is a nightmare because of continous pressure to "correct the imbalances of the past" and sell out the family silver to opportunists "my brother" without any skills that could add value to the company.

The planes out of Johannesburg to any of the destinations in Africa I've been is fully loaded - mostly with skilled people from South Africa.

In the foreign countries we operate in, we are seen as the bringers of good fortune - the source of bread on the table. As such one is usually treated very well by the locals (though the red tape could make it look different)

In short, for a skilled white person, it is better to avoid using his skills to the benefit of South Africa. It is far more frustrating than utilising your skills to the benefit of Lesotho, Botswana,Angola, Zambia, the DRC ...

What BS!

The principle of AA is to give a job to a lesser qualified/experienced/knowledgeable person but with a more politically correct race or sex attribute. Otherwise it would not have been AA. It would have been an appointment made on merit. Now what happens to the better qualified/experienced/knowledgeable person but of a politically incorrect race or sex attribute that did not get the job. Such person have to find another job in a place where AA principles can not be used for discrimination purposes - ergo - leave SA. Result - reduction in net skill pool leading eventually to shortage.

But history has taught us that our esteemed Minister was also an AA appointment. He is intellectually disadvantaged.
