Can I make a prediction here: SA will not obtain junk status. Universities will remain the best on the continent, quality of life will improve. The wealth gap will remain. Crime rates will improve, Zuma will leave office. Zim 2.0 is a dream as much as the "nag van die lang messe"

December is when the rating agencies tell the rest of the world we are no longer a country good to invest in. Economic decay will accelerate at that point.

The resulting social evils which escalate will be proportional to the rate of economic decay, and visa versa.

This has the potential to set off a particularity viscous negative spiral (economically, socially and politically), and will be almost will impossible to break without some form of coup.

If we can contain slowing GDP growth, capital outflows, rand depreciation and rising budget/current account deficits then we might have a strong case to avert a downgrade. How are we looking in the second half of the year since the last ratings?

South Africa needs the downgrade so we can start over. We can't do much with regards to capital flights, most of it is for illegitimate reasons, so it's better that you let that go and rebuild from fundamentals. People think the ANC are a bit mental when they keep harping on about where the economy should be. If you strip up the crazy you'll realise there's merit to the argument that the economy needs to be in the control of people committed to be here, not those who got caught out with large sums still stuck here at the dawn of the new dispensation. Those capitalist would prefer to get their money out because they have irrational reasons for mistrusting the new era. Such a scenario is unsustainable, but the ANC have ulterior motives even while they have the correct diagnosis for moving forward.

Seems the students are so short sighted that they dont consider what would happen to the QUALITY of the education once it becomes free. Have they not looked at our state hospitals that is essentially free to see in what condition its in?

That however is not the problem. Free, as in the students don't pay for it directly, education can remain high quality. State hospitals are not poorly run or low quality because the patients don't pay for services.

That makes it much more difficult for some people, those that have the means or location to send their children to quality schools that they have carefully selected. Moving, even to another city, means doing all that again.

Ironically enough here the pay disparity is very small and I still find it very strange that someone who sweeps the streets for a living has his hair cut at the same place I do, that my friend is what South Africa should be aiming for.

I think our chance starts in 2019. Something needs to happen between now and then for South Africans to start shaping the future which may include removal of the ANC.

How do you know that? I always find it astonishing how people can just generally refer to Europe like it's one big homogenous country. My experience in The Netherlands so far is that most people are extremely outspoken and not afraid to say things. That is only based on my experience though, so I will not label the entire country.

Because in Zim the political situation precipitated the collapse. As I said if the ANC go full populist retard it would mean rock bottom and chance we don't ever recover.

I think they will go down that route.

If University students cannot apply their minds, then I have little hope the masses will have the capacity to understand effects of a downgrade and hold ANC accountable. The ANC will blame the downgrade on apartheid, whites, private companies etc.

How much do you think that is going to grow when everyone and their mom can suddenly go study for free.

Its very simple. In a country where everyone pays tax and everyone contributes, you can have excellent public services because just like a private medical scheme - all members are adding to it. In a country where a tiny minority pay direct income tax, making a service free for everyone will inevitably lead to a decline in standards as there are not enough contributing members. And if our schooling system and healthcare is anything to go by, we already know what the outcome will be.
