hi guys

this morning while driving in traffic the lady in front of me just stops dead on the highway cause of traffic and my brakes didnt hold in time and i just bumped her abit ....her car was a renault clio and mines a golf. ...i just bought the car 2 months ago adn still shopping around for insurance .

the thing is her car had very little damage ...well was just a bumper light ..and small scratches on bumper from my paint ...i have pics but cant seem to upload

it was a renault clio around 2002-2004 shape ...the older hatchback models

does anyone around here how much it cost to replace one of those and to just buffer down the bumper so the paint gets removed

my car well my one headlamp is bust and my grill broken and small dent on fender ...so not bad damage but im worried about her car and i dont have insurance to cover

If she claims from her insurance then I think you might be in trouble 'cause her insurer will probably come after you to recoup some of their costs. If she chooses to fix the damage on her own then you'll probably be able to work something out. Beware though, there is no incentive for her to try and find a cheap fix for her car. She might try get the entire rear bumper replaced at your expense.

Whatever happens, you should get on the phone and get yourself some insurance ASAP even if it's only 3rd party.

I am no expert, but given the damage to your car, there might be more to the damage on her car then meets the eye. Sometimes there is a stiffner or something behind the bumper - that might have taken most of the impact. This might need to be replaced. And depending where she wants to fix, a lot of panel beaters will replace that whole bumper.

and yeah me was thinking the same thing ....but are there any clauses stating that you cant claim within a period for 3rd party eg i take out today and within a month have to pay for her claim

and she said she just purchased the car and she just got insurance so not sure if she would want to claim

the damage is minimal ....just the number plate light fitting fell off and scratches on the bumper

You wont be able to take out the insurance now and be able to claim for this.

Replacing the front bumper and fixing the front left light cluster on my 2006 Honda Civic 5-door in 2007 cost almost R20k (at least that's how much the panel beater charged my insurance). The Cleo will probably be alot cheaper.

Anything from R8k - R20k

Sorry for you. Get insurance. It's only expensive until you need it.

its a 2002 -04 clio ....im sure the bumper wont be that expensive cos there is no damage on the bumper like major ...and its the rear bumper ....no lights or anything involved

My back bumper, brake light and boot repair is R25,000.

If I were her I would insist the parts be replaced... I wouldn't want a crack or something 'repaired'.

but she just took out insurance cos she said she just got the car this week or last so if she is gna claim it would be like 2/3 months so what if i get insurance and when she claims for it my insurance would then cover....cos i doubt she made a police report or anything like that

OP i assume you purchased your car cash?

Yes get insurance NOW, shopping around really doesn't take 2 months.

Doesn't matter any which way.

If you can get her to repair it privately you will save some costs. If not then her insurance will claim it back from you. However you can come to an agreement with them as to what you can pay them back monthly. I have heard of people paying R 50 a month back to insurance claims. If you have the cash to get her bumper fixed it would work out cheaper. If not let her insurance just claim it back from you. (This is likely to be 500% more expensive as panel beaters rape insurance companies big time.)

You cannot get insurance after the fact. Period. In any event, you will need to disclose this accident to your new insurer.

Assuming you do get insurance, when the other insurer contacts your insurance, they will state the date of the accident and bingo - you will not be covered and either your premiums will increase (assuming you did not disclose this) or your new insurer will not continue to insure you.

Dude, a car is insured from the day you take the insurance is taken out, you usually get a letter stating its covered.

In order for her to claim she needs to report the accident to the police - she needs a case number - that needs to be done within 24 (or 48 cant remember) hours from the time of the accident. Her insurance will want this case number.

Your insurance would not cover anything done to the car before your insurance is approved. To do something like you suggesting would constitute insurance fraud, and secondly i dont think you will get away with it, insurance companies are very clever and do their best not to pay out unless they really have to.

You going about this the wrong way mate - you were not insured, you have to pay - you not going to find a way to get out of it.
