I've suffered from mild acne for the past few years but recently had a bit of a breakout so I went to a dermatologist and she prescribed me Accutane.

I'm fully aware of the side-effects and not sure if I should take it. Has anyone here been on it and what were your experiences?

Thanks.

Yep I have. Also mild case but I couldn't be happier since I went on it :) Starts out ok for the first week or two, then starts getting dry. Not SOO bad but lips start chafing etc. So i would recommend a good moisturizer and lip balm (i recommend this stuff as it was the only stuff that worked for me. mission to find though [look in dischem] and expensive (+-R80). )

When I was a teen I had terrible acne.....and I mean absolutely terrible. The dermatologist said "my my, someone thinks he's superman"....

Anyway I went on roaccutane and it made one hell of a difference to me. I never took the time to read the side effects. That task was taken care of by parents and the doctor.

My lips were incredibly dry when I was on that stuff. But I have to say it saved my face. Today I look like any normal person, no scarring, no oilyness. I recommend it, but only in bad cases, where you may end up with scars etc. omo.

Thanks. What dosage were you on? Did it cause you to break-out initially? Had any problems with joint/muscle ache or was dryness the only side effect?

It dries out everything. Get some lip ice, eyegene, etc. You will be warned not to conceive. I don't think you will be able to do any impact sport as your joints will be dry. You will have dry skin.

It was discussed here on the forum before. Do a search. I think it worked well for some forum members. I was incorrectly diagnosed and was prescribed Roaccutane. 5 months of hell but worth it to get rid of acne for good.

I was on fairly low I think. But they work it out according to your body weight and then compensate for how bad it is from there as far as i know. From what I can remember, first month was 30 just to get into it, then upped to 40 the next one. I didn't break out initially as such no. It's really not as bad as they make out! Good luck dude, i'm sure you will be thrilled with it at the end of it! Btw at times you think it's not going to work etc. but trust me it does :)

I never had any joint pain etc but my friends did. I think my acne was so bad that I would not even notice a break out :D Seriously try the face wash first,it is what I use after accu.

Sadly in my case i had it so bad as a teen scars were unavoidable sadly. Neck, face, back but it's all good, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger eh :p, i can say without that drug i think my scarring it would have been 100 times worse. Dryness is a big side effect, summer is the worst time to take it, avoid the sun if you can as well.

When you say mild acne though what do you mean? Like now i just acne around my chin but since i stopped using a blade on my face it's clear.

How old are you?

How much does it cost these days? i recall it costing somewhere around the 1k mark.

I was on it for a while, helped a lot but -> everything so dry!

I had random nosebleeds often, and it can make you depressed( I dunno if that's just from not being able to be in the sun though).

I'm 27. I've had acne on and off since I was about 16. I've tried almost everything ranging from all sorts of topical treatments and anti-biotics.

My main concern is the scarring not the acne itself. I have a few scars on my temples. So I figure the best way to prevent any further scarring is to prevent any further acne, and since nothing else worked in the past 10 years, I'm hoping that Accutane will.

I got 60x20Mg Oratane capsules from Dischem for about R415.

Scar treatment (laser) in the future is going to cost me more than the accutane course, so prevention rather than cure, right?

Is that oratane on a script?

Scar treatment is useless dude if the scars are old, you are chucking away your money.

Mom has bad scars so yeah it should do the trick. You live in JHB? Maybe I can hook you up with laser for cheaper but I must ask my friend.

Oh ja, this has reminded me that i did get a few nose bleeds as well while on this. Thats purely as a result of having an incredibly dry nose, and either blowing too hard or picking a vein when you're trying to clear something out.

I dont recall ever having joint or muscular pain. I dont recall feeling depressed, though in hindsight as a moody teenager, i probably couldnt accurately pinpoint anything on this drug anyway -- i could probably use it as an excuse though :)

Surely the depression could just be a symptom of the bad acne and not the drug? I have ever met a happy person with chronic acne.

Yea. You're only able to get it with a script afaik. The Roche Roaccutane was for R685.

I live in PTA. The derm recommended fraxel laser after the accutane course. You shouldn't do anything to your face while on accutane since it makes your skin highly sensitive. For now the plan is to prevent any further scarring.

Now that people mention it, I remembered. Stay out of the sun! I went into the sun while on it, veeeeeery bad idea.
