I also have mild adult acne. I'm just so tired of it. I control it 85 % with benzoyl peroxide but the benzoyl peroxide isn't 100 % effective and it's a nuisance. So I'm considering asking my GP to put me on a lowest therapeutic dose for a shortest possible period.

Do you think this is wise?

How do you think my GP will respond?

Why type of acne is it? A few white heads or cystic acne?

My doctor ended up giving me Isotrex gel (topical isotretinoin) which seems like a good compromise.

While I was there, one of the other doctors behaved very unprofessionally. There was a patient waiting for him and as he walked past and saw this patient, he raised his voice and in an irritated tone said to the receptionist: "I'm not available at the moment, why do you keep sending me patients". I wonder how that patient must have felt.

I had to wait 45 minutes for the doctor I saw (my appointment was for 13:30 but I only saw him 14:15), but it was worth it as he demonstrated his competence once again while discussing the treatment options with me and explaining to me why he felt that Isotrex gel was the best first option for my skin.

What his explanation? Depending on the acne topical stuff does not solve the problem.

Acne depending on the type develops from inside, so you are treating the problem not the cause.

I feel a bit irritated.

I paid an after-hours surcharge of R 150 and I see they billed my medical aid R 310.50. Hence they charged R 460.50 for an appointment that lasted 5 minutes and for which the doctor was 45 minutes late without even an apology: "Sorry I'm a bit late".

Changed my daughters life, she inherited my bad acne, was miserable as sin, would'nt go out, loss of confidence.... took her to dermatologist, who placed her on Roaccutane, changed her life completely....

I am aware of the side effects and keep an eye out for any behavioural changes she might have, but she is looking great now, playing tons of sport and going on tours.... always keeps lip ice .... with her.....

I've suffered from mild acne for the past few years but recently had a bit of a breakout so I went to a dermatologist and she prescribed me Accutane.

I'm fully aware of the side-effects and not sure if I should take it. Has anyone here been on it and what were your experiences?

Thanks.

Was on ROACCUTANE more than 13 years ago. Worked brilliantly and the ONLY thing that worked as advertised. Kept the Acne away for 13 years and recently my ACNE started flaring up a little. So I asked my doctor to put me on another course. Course is done, and again ACNE is a thing of the past. This stuff works. Side effects are a bit crap, but disappear within weeks of the treatment ending. This stuff really is the best thing since sliced bread.

Been taking 20mg for a week now. Only started noticing dry skin on the nose and dry lips from yesterday. Had a headache for the first two days but I don't know if that was related or not.

Those side effects will get worse. labelo (the one in the white container) and aqueous cream. That is all you need. Stay out of the sun also. Acne will get worse before it gets better though. So dont worry if it gets a little worse first.

Staying out of the sun, that was one of the cons..... she missed swimming outdoors..... but still reckons the trade off was worth it...

I know EXACLTY how she feels. But she couldve still done swimming and been outdoors if she wanted. She would then just have to probably smear the exposed parts of her skin with the highest SPF sun screen she can get her hands on. And even then, she shouldve avoided prolonged exposure to the sun.

Ironically enough she just left to Windhoek on a swimming tour this morning, indoor short course pool. Her club here in our town has an indoor heated pool.

She does not like to swim in our portapool at home and the main town pool which is open....

Headache could be due to dry skin on face and scalp those are sensitive areas (unlikely though probably just coincidence).

Double your fluid intake very important. Buy decent moisturisers, lip balm, saline nasal spray and if your eyes get affected artifical tears.

Decent sun block the nivea invisable is good, easy to apply and doesnt leave theat greasy feeling.

If your skin begins to crack then get bephanthen (dexpanthenol). Its used for nappy rash and cracked nipples but will work well on cracked lips.

I don't have bad acne per say, more like frequent small pimple breakouts, but it is really pissing me off and wish it would end.

would a small dosage course help with this?

and once you are off will they just keep returning?

I don't think they will give you a course for small ones. Try use cetaphil face wash, seems to help me.

Use benzac in the morning and illotycin (tretinoin) or differin gel (adaphalene) at night it will go away. You can also do a cyst opening at a dermatologist but thats a painful procedure
