The basic one, for R1 999-00 @ The Mall @ Reds

/me runs

Is this the one with the 8Gb SSD? a family member bought one, it really dissappointed. Once XP Home and MS Word 2003 & Excel 2003 were loaded (with all the Acer bloatware) the SSD was 92% full. Needless to say Windows becomes a little unstable when the main drive is so full. Takes around 4-5 mins to complete boot up.

I saw other AspireOne models with 160Gb HDD's. That might be a better idea I guess?

I didnt think the 8gm SSD model was intended for running windows - didnt it come with linux?

Well you can get back some space by making pagefile only 250mb, turning off system restore and telling the recycle bin to keep 0% of hdd for rubbish. Delete immediately.

I doubt though for 1999 it has an ssd in it. Of course the 8gb is meant for running windows, i have windows running on 8gb dell, after turning of the 3 things above i have 2gb free on the ssd and i have a 16gb sd card for storage, windows 7 ultimate runs like a dream on my 8gb dell. Formatted it because xp is not nearly as nice looking. The sd transfers data at about 4 mb/sec which is not all that bad :).

We are/were thinking along the same lines, I did exactly that. Even inserted another 8Gb flash disk and moved the swap file there, did not help too much though.

Bwana, perhaps Linux would have been a better bet, but came pre-installed with XP Home (and a legal version too).

The low end AAOs are all SSD.

Yeah - I had a look and it turns out they did make a 8GB model with XP.

Never not for 1999, you will never get an ssd i don't think. the high end ones have an 8gb ssd. The low end ones come with 160gb hdd which costs a lot less than the 8gb ssd.

Yea man install linux for sure, if all she uses it for is browsing, email and some word processing load linux for sure. No linux is very easy these days, sure you may run into major problems should the sound or something not work but linux is very good out the box as far as i know. If she does not like it you can always go back to windows.

/queues the linux boys :p, they can tell you more but they will say go for it i am sure.

Look at the Amazon prices and tell me the low end ones come with the hdd.

The 16gb SSD model is $61 cheaper than the 120gb hdd.

Should I install Linux? I myself have never used it, and she is not a power user, would it be difficult to get used to? Apologies if this is off-topic..:)
If you can get the Acer's Linpus linux version then it works well. Ubuntu requires a bit of work.

Bwana i don't to sound like i am being stubborn but i do not see a 16gb one there, the one ssd i see for 238 dolla only has a 3 cell battery, link to the ones you speak of. Majority have 160gb hdd.

Sorry - 8gb SSD - http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AOA110-1...e=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1240577133&sr=8-9 - $238.99. Comes with XP and a 8gb SD card which is what threw me.

120gb HDD - http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AOA150-1...8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240577133&sr=8-8 - $299.99 - Also comes with XP.

SSD model is $61 less than HDD.

8GB SSD comes with the low-end Aspire One. The normal price for the notebook is R2999 @ Incredible. During their "trade-in" special, you could get it for R2499 + working/not working PC.

This one is the 8GB SSD version that comes with Linpus Linux.

They only had the blue ones left. Initially wanted the white one (what was advertised), but still quite happy with the blue one.

I run Linux full time, so my plan is to install Ubuntu. Ideally would prefer full Ubuntu, but need to check how it will run. If it runs badly, I'll use the netbook remix.

:D :D :D

Also got myself a Logitech Alto Connect stand for my proper notebook (R299), and Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition 2007 (R599).

They're crazy busy!

Wow yea bwana i see your point hey, strange thats it is cheaper must mean the price of 8gb ssd's must have dropped a kuk load with all the netbooks moving around.

8GB SSD has dropped in price DRAMATICALLY in the last while.

Typing this on the brand spanking new AAO :D

Now to find out where the AAO club is so I can join and we can talk about current affairs and drink kopi luwak :D

For anyone prepared to do the work, you can have the best of all possible worlds on the very cheapest entry-level Acer Aspire One (8GB SSD) for anywhere between R2K and R3K depending on the reseller. Mosey over to the best forum for AAO aficionados (http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/) and you'll find all the instructions for the interesting challenge of converting it to XP, including a few basic rules like not using the NTFS file system.

Once converted it will indeed run like the proverbial dog -- but then you need to spend some time applying the various tweaks mentioned in that forum, most importantly installing a wonderful little freebie caching app called FlashPoint and perhaps another (Russian!) one called eBoostr (similar to Vista's ReadyBoost) which is a full-function freebie in its four-hours-per-session demo version. Then turn off Prefetch and run a few other little tweaks and at the end for just a couple of grand or so you will have a distinctly un-shabby little workhorse which could even, at a pinch with a USB keyboard and an external monitor, serve as an everyday XP machine. Five hundred rand or so adds extra storage (another 8GB in an SD card) and another GB of RAM (though it is admittedly quite a technical challenge to install the RAM). If you don't mind all that, or even think it's a fun challenge as so many on that forum obviously do, the Acer is a little gem! Doubling the price just to get a pre-installed XP and a more power-hungry and less robust 'real' hard-drive really is a nonsense!
