Acer's impressive One

"Interestingly, when an SD card is inserted into a slot the system automatically integrates the storage into the entire system. In other words, the 8GB capacity is extended by the volume inserted and it appears to the users as one, larger, drive instead of being mounted as another drive. "

I wonder if this is done via LVM...

What a useless review.

This thing has been out for ages already, and the 1Gb Ram XP version is the standard now, that one comes with a 120Gb Hdd.

They go for around R5000.00, and that's from the Incredible Con. They are a much better deal.

Anyway, useless review...

I am sorry but you can keep these weird little Linux distros that they install on the Netbooks. I had a EEEPC and it frustrated me no end.

Got an MSI Wind this week and I am really impressed. 120 gig hard drive, 1 gig of RAM and a nice 10 inch screen. And it runs Windows so I can do anything that I want it to.

I have an EEEPC and the Linux OS on it is awesome. Its is quick and rock solid stable. Perhaps if you knew more about Linux you could "do anything you want on it", like me !

I have the Vodacom AAO plus modem and 250 MB/month contract which is excellent value over 24 months. I'm really pleased with the AAO and Linux, and the best thing is that since I don't need antivirus software slowing it to a crawl, it is really quick and responsive. My sympathies to all those stuck with XP.

haha sure being the linux fanboy i am, i am supposed to say 'go linux go!' but in all honestly this review made it sound as though this is linux with it's hand chopped off..please tejl me they atleast with the distro installed give u access to the terminal..otherwise i'm disgusted

I'm actually looking at one of these, but the XP ones. How well do they run other applications; obviously not games but video etc?

Is this on 24 mths, I thought (assumed) they only offered 36mths - if it is true then I would consider it

EDIT: I hope it has not got LINPUS on it, I cannot take anything serious that makes me think of a Urinal

I was also under the impression that the laptop deals were 36 months:confused:.

@fritzm: How much are you paying per month for that deal?

I have run multiple versions of Red Hat (starting in 1999), Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, Slackware and the "interesting" Xandros that ships with the EEEPC. So um ja I know nothing about Linux.

I want to:

  • Run Outlook 2007 to connect to our corporate exchange server. And no I don't want to use Evolution cause it is buggy and does not offer the tight integration that Outlook does.
  • I want to run Visual Studios 2008 and SQL Server 2008 Express to do some development on. And I don't want to use Mono cause I want .Net 3.5 SP 1 support.
  • I want to be able to sync my iPod Touch with it.
  • I want to be able to run Google Chrome without having to use the tweaked version that I read about for Linux on the web. Yes I know nothing about browsers. I have tried Firefox, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer and Chrome works for me.

So there are some things that you can't do with the EEEPC 701. The version of Firefox that came with it also lagged loading some pages especially when there were multiple tabs open. But that is not really the OS's fault cause the Atom in the MSI Wind is faster than the Celeron in the EEEPC. But if everyone loves the Linux installation they put on there why are the returns for the Linux machines they sell so much higher than the Windows ones?

Now it is your turn to call me stupid for daring to suggest that there are some situations where Windows is better than Linux. You can also mention that Bill Gates is evil and wants to take over the world. You should also point out that there are millions of viruses on Windows and that just by being online you can get infected (The last time I got a virus was 1998).

No technology is perfect. All of them have their weak spot and strengths. There are some usage scenarios where Linux beats Windows hands down and there are times when Windows is the best choice...for my needs the Windows XP version of the MSI Wind is the best.

They advertise it as 36 months, but when I actually went to a Vodacom shop to apply, they told me that the AAO deal was only available over 24 months, which I prefer anyway - tying myself to an overpriced data contract for 3 years when prices are going to fall does not seem clever.

The price per month is R159 for the 250 MB data and R169 for the laptop (including E220 modem) over 24 months.

The default setup is intended to prevent ignorant users from messing things up I think, but Alt-F2 gives you a terminal, and from there you can do anything your heart desires (ain't Linux wonderful). The default installation has root setup without a password, so you really can do anything.

It is Linpus, and I also find the name unfortunate. I prefer Ubuntu, and I could install it on the AAO, but I am firmly reminding myself that I got a lapbook to do specific things, not to spend my life tinkering with it, much as I would enjoy that. It does what I need (access Gmail, run Chandler, Openoffice, and Freemind) and I'm not messing further with it (until temptation gets the better of me).

Fritz

Yeah, and there is the problem, if it will get the 'better of you' then you are basicaly f*cked. I like to do what 'I' want and not be limited/limited as little as possible, by the OS. As much as I hate Windows and Nokia,I use XP and a N95 8gig. And yes I too know a thing or 2 about C/C++ and Linux , after all I work with the 'donnerse goed' before Internet come to your country :D

Thanks

I'm going to phone my guy tomorrow for this. The price is exactly my budget and I need another E220 modem for development work I'm doing. Also the 250Mb is perfect for backup bandwidth.

I like how the EEEPC was first introduced at under R2000, but the price has slowly but steadily gone up up up to over 6k for some models...:o

And I refuse to pay 2k extra just to have essentially the same machice come with Windows. Is there no way to buy the Linux version and replace it with XP?

Hifi corp have these laptops for under 3k, I think.
Their website is down, so can't post a link.

No that is the eeePC 700 which is the very first model that started the whole lapbook trend. By current standards it is very limited - slow processor, 4GB SSD, 7" 800 pixel wide screen so you have to scroll sideways for most websites. For some reason no-one has brought in up-to-date models of the eeePC into SA which is a pity because it gives the whole genre a bad name. The Asus Aspire One is an entirely different kettle of fish - the equivalent eee PC would be the 901.

Fritz

PS Please don't understand me wrong when I say the eee PC 700 gives the genre a bad name - it was an awesome idea and it was what got me enthusiastic about the whole concept, but it doesn't stand comparison to what is available now.
