Acer's impressive One

PS Please don't understand me wrong when I say the eee PC 700 gives the genre a bad name - it was an awesome idea and it was what got me enthusiastic about the whole concept, but it doesn't stand comparison to what is available now.

Agree 100% here

Was looking at getting mine a few months ago until I saw what was now available. Now the Acer & MSI seems to be the leaders.

Typing this on my MSI Wind U100. I can really recommend it. I got the one with Windows XP on it - I think you can get SUSE as well??

Big screen, excellent keyboard, pretty zippy and all the connectivity options you could want. Only thing that sucks is I got the 3 cell battery that only gives me about +- 2 hours in power saving mode. Trying to track down a 6 cell battery for it!

No that is the eeePC 700 which is the very first model that started the whole lapbook trend. By current standards it is very limited - slow processor, 4GB SSD, 7" 800 pixel wide screen so you have to scroll sideways for most websites. For some reason no-one has brought in up-to-date models of the eeePC into SA which is a pity because it gives the whole genre a bad name. The Asus Aspire One is an entirely different kettle of fish - the equivalent eee PC would be the 901.

I saw some guy using one on the seat next to me on a plane, that's why I noticed the HiFi Corp ad, he was playing some RPG on it.

Just came back from Vodacom and by chance happen to get an opportunity to play with Acer. Must say these new netbooks (MSI / ACER) are miles ahead of the Asus.

So impressed that I ordered mine and should arrive Monday. Taking it on 250Meg for R280 pm as I need the backup bandwidth for peace of mind. You try doing emergency sysadmin only to find your line is down (even happens to Neotel).
