ADSL bandwidth provider speed comparison

Wow thats a surprise, would have assumed Telkom would offer better international downloads speeds. Guess I'll be sticking with my plugg IS account then.

I was also surprised. I assumed Telkom Unshaped would be tops...

I disagree with this report, Telkom shaped international is way better than these figures.
I download off international sites often and almost always get way better than these figures, my average international speed is most probably in the region of 3.6meg.

Something smells funny here, dunno how they got those results.

How can you disagree with a survey result? It is an average. It is what it is. You may be getting better figures than the average, but this is obviously counterbalanced by users who are getting a worse performance with Telkom shaped.

:erm: They add up the speed test results for each service in the survey and divide by the number of tests performed for each service.

It would be nice to see the raw scores. It might be that there was only one or two MTN Business tests, which would make the result less reliable.

There were indeed far fewer MTN/Verizon results than with the rest. For the rest the results there were really enough respondents to do an accurate comparison based on the types of tests the users performed. I can however add that there was not a significant variation in results from MTN Business, giving an indication that the average results are not too far off (not skewed by a few very high results).

When you gonna spread the light on how **** SAOL is? We had no international again tonight! Fifth time this month.

rpm, can you break it down into 384k, 512k, and 4096k brackets?

And I would love to see Cybersmart's results too please :D

/me hands rpm coffee, awesome survey!

eish. It is a survey. Results are averaged. When I had 4MB I barely got 512 speeds, so just went back to 512 in the end.

I can only dream of these speeds :( I mean I don't even get the download speeds shown here on the uploads ... but me and my DSL384 we need to hang tight for a while longer :D

How about a normal ISP comparison?
On its way ;)

@Pilgrim: We may do a 384 and 512 breakdown, but to split and assemble all the results take a bit of time. Why we chose 4 Mbps is that it is more likely to show poor local or international bandwidth provisioning.

That makes sense, but I still would love to see it :)

Maybe some ISPs have such bad contention ratios that 384k is not even 384k

A problem with 4meg lines are that you are not just getting lower speeds because of backhaul constrains, there are people that have "4meg" lines that run at 1 meg. That brings down all the statistics, but it is not the fault of the ISP.

I'm confused about the request for an ISP speed comparison.

Would all (normal) SAIX accounts at all ISPs not be the same speed?

Also: which ISPs resell MTN ?

I think it is a bit harsh to call them the best and worst. These are big improvements from the past and hope it all continues to improve.

As mentioned earlier, I would have expected Telkom would have been better but the worse they are the better isn't it????

1. Yeah technically they should all be the same, however there are a bit more to take into consideration.

For example: IS's IPC originally was only in johannesburg, which make them less appealable to people in Cape Town. I see that they now also have a point int Durban, not sure about Cape Town, haven't used them in about 8 months.

G-Connect, FNB-Connect only have IPC links in Johannesburg. Cybermsart only has a IPC link in Cape Town.

Verizon I am not sure, but I know they started out in PE I think...

So to make it clearer. When I connect to FNB-Connect from Cape Town, my PPPoE sesssion first goes over the ADSL IP network to Johannesburg, then it breaks out on to the internet from there. So the latency to my very first hop is 35-40ms, where as Telkom/SAiX has IPC pops all over almost, so latency to my very first hop is 8-12ms. Immediately this has an affect on overall latency, even downloads because if there is a bottleneck on telkom's adsl ip network on a long link, I will be affected even though my ISP has no problems at all the exact same time.

This is why it is so difficult to start out with your own IPC, because the already expensive cost multiply for every pop you need/want to set up.

2. A few ISPs, Webafrica's multirealm unshaped with a .v at the end or Vanilla ISP, ask them for a Verizon account.

Verizon was bought out by MTN and renamed MTN Business.
