ADSL cap: how much is too much?

Telkom's capping system has always been suspect in regards to how much one can actually use before being capped. When I used to have a 512Kbps 3Gig account with Telkom there was a month or two when I knew I'd reached my cap, but still managed to download 20Gigs of international bandwith. I've always been a bandwith hungry user and just before I left Telkom for Neotel's Neoconnect uncapped package I was paying for about six different Telkom 3Gig packages a month. My speeds aren't as good as ADSL, but at least I don't have to feel guilty about any extra bandwith Telkom's fickle capping system provided me.

the most amount of money for the least amount of data!

Mweb and Cybersmart always capped me at 3gb precisely. Sucks.

Seacom can't come fast enough.

Point is this.. who cares....

3/2/1 GB Cap is unreasonable for service that is called "broadband" especialy at prices we are paying.... one should not be looking over the shoulder and frantically checking bits and bytes....

Agreed there are some users whose usage needs to be "curbed" .... but there is space for them too....look at Axxess and WebAfrica uncapped products.. it goes to show there is a market for the "power" users and they can coexists on the same infrastructure as everyone else... without braking a bank and/or networks..

So message to Telkom.. get a ready... for soon enough you will be extinct..

The current accounts should sit at 10/20/30 GB Cap with a yearly increase of 15% at least

We have 4x 3GB accounts, these are the values from various accounts over the last 2 months. As you can see its always 4.5GB. Telkom are just spinning again....

Combined Total - 4.55GB
Percentage used - 101.21% -> Actual cap=100%=4.4956GB

Combined Total - 4.51GB
Percentage used - 100.29% -> Actual cap=100%=4.4969GB

Combined Total - 4.63GB
Percentage used - 102.98% -> Actual cap=100%=4.4960GB

Combined Total - 4.60GB
Percentage used - 102.31% -> Actual cap=100%=4.4961GB

Combined Total - 4.63GB
Percentage used - 102.90% -> Actual cap=100%=4.4995GB

If there is going to be a cap on a broadband service, then it should be one which at least allows broadband usage. The term "broadband" does not mean, as interpreted by Telkom, a slightly higher speed than dialup. It means the ability to enjoy broadband services, which includes live video news feeds, radio feeds etc.

Based on the above, I have to conclude that a minimal monthly cap would be around 50Gbits.

Bunch of lies, My client, whose business is using telscum, used to get 5.5GB on the 3Gb account but now only 4.5 - 4.6GB, and there are usage statistics that goes all the way back for 24 months to back up my story, telkom has a growing subscriber base but they have not upgraded their network so the best way is to cut out the "extra" usage.

Bottom line is, what the hell are usage caps? the only caps I know are the ones that we put on our heads.....:p and believe me those caps do not cost R199 for 1 with line rental attached....

Days in a month = 365.24/12 = 30.4367
Seconds in a month = 30.4367 * 24 * 60 * 60 = 2 629 731

TAFC = Time at full capacity
POM = percentage of month

4Mbps(512KBps) line 3GB Cap -> TAFC=6144 seconds, POM=0.233%
4Mbps line 2GB Cap -> TAFC=4096 seconds, POM=0.156%
4Mbps line 1GB Cap -> TAFC=2048 seconds, POM=0.078%

512Kbps(64KBps) line 3GB Cap -> TAFC=49152 seconds, POM=1.869%
512Kbps line 2GB Cap -> TAFC=32768 seconds, POM=1.246%
512Kbps line 1GB Cap -> TAFC=16384 seconds, POM=0.623%

384Kbps(48KBps) line 3GB Cap -> TAFC=65536 seconds, POM=2.492%
384Kbps line 2GB Cap -> TAFC=43691 seconds, POM=1.661%
384Kbps line 1GB Cap -> TAFC=21845 seconds, POM=0.831%

429x 0.233% (POM 4Mbps 3GB) = 100%, so for every 1:1 4Mbps line Telkom own they squeeze in 429 3GB users....

I can also vouch for that, we also use to get over 5.5GB per account until a couple of months ago, then we only got 3GB for a few months, and now we get 4.5GB every month.

Is anyone else disgusted that in the last 7years caps haven't increased?

Well i got capped yesterday...

I have been using a local wireless supplier for about 3 years now
My speed is a fairly low 256 kb when compared to the ADSL connections, but I don't have a cap on my account

I average about 50 gigs per month for a cost of R400

For me the ADSL option means I read my emails super fast and that is my cap for the month
