I think that our Telkom line was hit this weekend by lightning. The is no dial tone when you pick up the phone. The ADSL still works but my connection speed is very low and erratic. Especially on international connectivity. I have a 4mb line and running a 2gb axxess lite account. My local speed are about 1.8mbs and international are about 0.22mb. This was according to speedtest.net. My ADSL modem also keeps changing the connection speeds. i.e. 4096/512 to 3936/480. It sometimes goes even lower. And changes every 30 seconds or so. Our neighbors' ADSL (also 4mb) works fine and we run from the same pole. Are all these problems inter-related? Could this be caused by lightning? Is it the line or the router thats broken? How long does it take for Telkom to actually come and fix the line? Is there anything I can do to fix the line my self?

Thank you.

My Line Attenuation is 45db/30db
and noise margin is 8.5db/13db

Perhaps your neighbour has a better ADSL modem than you...

Other than getting a better ADSL modem, downgrading is most likely going to be your only other alternative. You can get Telkom to come and fix it, but I'm not sure if they'll be able to make it better at all.

I have a very similar problem... also no dial tone, and my 4mbps line is also not running at full speed as it previously did for at least 30 months...
I know it is not the router, as I had this replaced.
I am not anywhere close to Randburg, as I am in Cape Town, but it seems we have the same problem.
It could very well be lightning, as the router I was using at he time, is no longer functional.

Unfortunately there are 100's of reasons for ADSL problems.

You can try switching from ADSL2+ mode to G.Dmt mode. I hope your ADSL modem allow you to pick a mode. By the way, what ADSL modem do you have?

If that doesn't solve the problem, then you can ask the Telkom technician to check the connections at the DSLAM, because the connections can corrode, which would lead to a decrease in the SNR margins (and stability of your ADSL line of course).

I have netgear DGN220 router. Worked wonderfully for the last 6 months. Still wanna know why there is such a differance between international and local connectivity. Should be the same speed if the line is the problem. or the router

I am also having a similar prob and I am in durbs .... I think this has to do with some guys fiddling on the exchange .... as I tend to get this every 6+ months .. have to log a call with telkom ... and about 3 faults logged and 4 technicians :) .... they finally get someone competent and change my dslam port/whatever and then its fine ... till the next time :)

Thanks.. I will contact them and get them to try this for me.

Im in 4ways also suspect storm damage but at the dslam. My tel line is fine..dialling tone etc. ADSL drops synch erratically and running very slow. 4mbps line current speed test 0.8 mbps...logged fault with telkom. lets see what happens

Well I've heard from telkom. Definitely a line problem they say. Hope telkom guy shows up quick. Connectivity issues are really getting on my nerve!
