ADSL data at R14 per GB

So how do you put it in your router when you need a connection manager?

I *think* the connection manager only needed for 3g and wifi? ADSL is setup like normal.

Please correct me here if i am wrong?

OK, my mind has been made up now thanks to the G-Connect: Dumping Neotel in August (when my contract expires), getting G-Connect & Telkom and then I'll use the 3G for my wifes small business (she only needs 100MB p/m) and then as soon as my 3G contract expires next year I'll switch to that !!!

Yeah, problem solved.

I bought the R380 30-month package.
I tested via my 4MB dsl at last night.

Download speed after 20:00 was average, NOT full speed.
With a 4mb DSL my downloads averaged at about 315-340k, compared to my other ISP contract via AXXESS and IS as 410k.

Not that is is a huge problem, since you can download up to 27GB.

But the problem I have and that I think is pure STUPID is the connection manager. Once you subcribe, you are provided with a generic DSL username and password. Once you open you browser you are prompted for your 12-character 30-day voucher number, and it works like any wifi hotspot.
And the loading page must remain open to stay connected :(
I have a issue with that I dont want to type this silly voucher number in every time I open my browser.

I have not tested this with dual laptops connecting using the same vouchers, will do that tonight.

Ideally you want a unique DSL username and password that is entered onto you router/gateway ONCE!!!

I trailed Gconnect and Afrihost in January. I do p2p, online gaming, lots of browsing and have multiple computers on my home network.

Gconnect and Afrihost gave me similar performance in throughput and latency for all practical purposes. I however decided on Afrihost due the highly annoying landing page / connection manager required by G-Connect. Until such time G-Connect get rid of the landing page, I will not consider them as an alternative for my ADSL needs.

I agree 100%!!!

So you can create a dialup PPPoE connection in Windows, Linux OSX no need for software? what is the truth here please I don't like all this confusion.

yes..you can use a dialup PPPoE in windows, that how I am connected right now.
You dont need the software.....I guess it for people who don't know how to set it up....

from the website (https://gconnect.wirelessg.co.za/stuck.aspx):
"Create a PPPOE connection with the following credentials (if you are not using the connection manager):

Username: [email protected]
Password: GConnect

You will then be presented with a landing page when accessing the Internet via your Web Browser. Here you will need to enter your G-Connect username and password which you created during the Sign Up process.."

Okay so it's not proper pppoe as mentioned before, you still need to use the Gconnect landing page which is annoying.

yeah unfortunately.....but once you logged on the landing page, I am using the comp like normal. Been downloading stuff for the past two hours without it disconnecting.

If Afrihost can't sort their issue out for me I'll switch and put up with the inconvenience I suppose... hoping that webafrica will compete come march so I can use them as my main ISP not prepaid.

If i'm not mistaken... it wouldn't disconnect you because you are keeping the session alive just by downloading. Surely it would disconnect you after 5min if you leave the line idle.

you are right since I got the account this morning it has not disconnected since I have been downloading.
I shall pause the downloading and leave it idle for 5/10min and let you know if it disconnects.

FYI....I left my computer idle for 10min with nothing downloading in the background and closed all programs, to see if it disconnects and prompts me to enter my password on the landing page.
well it did NOT disconnect...so far so good.....now to get back to my downloads ;-)
